First define “Modern”, that is where the problem starts.

Basically there are people with talent and people without talent.

The ones who are talented, produce art. The rest, which is the majority, do not possess talent, hence they do not produce real art.

Art critics and sponsors often times must classify talentless work as art in order to SELL. Real art, real talent sells or is appreciated very quickly and it is usually unique. Talentless art must be evaluated, described, expounded upon and forced upon the public by those who stand to profit from it.

Most people know talent and art when they see it without the interference of agents, dealers, critics and a host of other leches...

im fortunate to live in Pittsburgh, where we have the Carnegie Museum....my son attended the andy warhol art school for children....they indulged in all sorts of arttistic endeavors.....

during the waiting time to pick him up after classes, the wife and i would wander the halls of the carnegie...i would be drawn to the classic masters and their work....i couldnt ‘get’ any of the so-called modern art, and repeatedly say so to anyone who will listen....

i find it abhorrent that some oversized canvas with a tiny red dot, hangs on the wall within the same building where a classic master’s work also is on display.....

It’s a form of nepotism....By honoring and patronizing garbage artists you are building a whole hive of untalented and otherwise unemployable people who will buy into your group think and support your neurotic, narrow view of the world.

Additionally, the “Emperor Has No Clothes” Syndrome is always in effect when it comes to Modern Art.....Everyone KNOWS it’s BS, but no one dare chance being chastised for not “getting it”.

If you enjoy representational art join the Art Renewal Center at www.artrenewal.org. There are many representational artists who are creating spectacular art that never makes the press.

Disclaimer: My view of Picasso is that he was a house painter with a great PR guy. Recentl tests of his paintings determined that he used house paint in many of his paintings. I was right.

Truthfully, bad art is bad art, whether you call it “modern” or not. And thus it has always been, it is not a new phenomenon.

This being said, there is an amazing amount of “good art” out there, much of it innovative, thought provoking, questioning and even mysterious or enigmatic. Sometimes it integrates technology to make the viewer a part of the artwork, or interactive with it. Sometimes it is sensuous, invoking perceptions beyond the visual, such as auditory, touch, and sometimes even odor and taste, if it is “food art”.

But you need to hunt for it.

That's very true. Also this:

[From “The Naked Communist,” by Cleon Skousen]
CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

I thought modern art always has been a synonym for “bad”.

I blame the Dadaists. They made art safe for people that should be in a padded cell.

I also blame the 'Mamaists'. They made art safe for people with no talent, by coddling them and telling them how wonderful they are instead of telling them their work sucks...

;-)

Good art will pay for itself, bad art should starve to death.

Vincent van Gogh was unavailable for comment... Kidding, I agree 99.99% (leaving a little wiggle room for who is the arbiter of what is good or bad).

I am an artist. For what it is worth, I regularly sell paintings online for ridiculously low prices... what the market will bear. My stuff varies from realistic to impressionistic. However, I do see some merit in the abstract stuff...sometimes. When I look out at the world, I see shapes, colors, values (light to dark) and lines. These elements are the abstract structure that makes up reality.

The best way to learn to draw and paint reality is to see these elements separately from their label. In other words, to draw a tree accurately, you should not say, “That is a tree.” You should say, “There is a light shape next to a dark shape and a mass of green next to a large blue shape and so on. You should draw what you see, rather than drawing “things with names”. Your tree will look like a popsicle unless you forget that it is a tree while you are drawing it.

So, anyway, when you see things like this, you start to see the beauty of the shapes and values and colors and some artists will take this further and make a painting where you may or may not see anything on which you can place a label...but the colors and shapes and values are harmonious and the painting is interesting and pleasing to the eye.

That being said, there is a lot of garbage art out there designed to deconstruct, insult and offend...and a lot of gullible people who will buy it.
