Patrol says a state trooper arrested a driver after clocking his speed at more than 200 mph.
The patrol says Trooper Ryan Smith pulled over 19-year-old Hector Fraire Saturday on the Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma City. Authorities say Fraire was driving a Ford Mustang and the troopers radar clocked the car at 176 mph and then 208 mph.
Authorities say the driver attempted to elude the state trooper, turning off his headlights and brake lights at one point.
Fraire was eventually pulled over at a red light. The highway patrol says the driver stopped his car and dropped his keys out of the window.
The highway patrol says the driver was arrested on complaints of reckless driving and felony eluding.
When I was that young and dumb. I had a 1970 Mustang Mach 1, when I spent almost double the cost of the vehicle, it would go fast. But, it would reach a point of the front wheels lifting off at about 141 - 145mph. I don’t believe there are any new laws of physics in play. So, I don’t believe 208 in a standard body Mustang.
I bet at that speed, the telephone poles looked like a picket fence, and the lines on the road just looked like dots.
I think that radar gun needs to be calibrated.
They look like that at 130.
One thing that fascinates me is that, though I love those old 60’s and 70’s mopar muscle cars (I own a copy of the original Vanishing point), they were really not very well made cars, at least by today’s standards. And the suspensions SUCKED for any kind of cornering.
I heard there is a company that will, for around $35k, put a modern suspension on an early 70’s challenger, but it still won’t beat a modern stock Mustang in cornering. That was four years ago.
they sure look cool though. I’d love to have a fully restured 1970 challenger convertible.
Fortuanately, when I was that young and dumb I had a 1963 Rambler classic with three on the tree and inline six.
But it had fold down seats. I went to the drive in a lot...
My daddy said, Son, you’re gonna drive me to drinkin’...
I go across the Kilpatrick about four times a year or more. There is a section on the west side where it does a lot of whoopty-doos spaced about 40 feet apart. It is west of the lake. I would say hitting that at even 120 would get you airborne
Exactly so.
But I would not want to be on a TRACK doing that kind of speed, much less a public highway.
Had there been a pothole, it could have gotten real messy real quick.....................
I live in north Okc and travel the TT quite frequently. That road has so much construction and ups and downs, there is no way he would have stayed on the road for very long above 150mph. He might of hit 160 or 170, but no way that car on that road reached 208mph.
Also, the guy was obviously an idiot. That is the most heavily patrolled road in all of OK. It is 100 miles to Tulsa from my house. If I see less than 10 troopers driving or parked along the turnpike, I am surprised. Major drug run from Texas/NM to Chicago.
Daddy had a 59 Rambler with the same setup. I am not certain of course but I suspect that is the reason my Brother had to get married at 19.
It turned out to be a productive marriage. He and his wife are now buried next to each other but their Great Grandchildren are all over the place.
It all started in a 59 Rambler which made into a bed.
turning off his headlights and brake lights at one point
Im sure they mean tail lights and not brake lights...but dont reporters know anything anymorelse.
Friend of mine had a switch to kill all the rear lights on his Roadrunner with the idea of evading at night. Don’t know if he ever used it.
Nah - I think it was 208. I got a 4 cylinder Ford Escort up to 120MPH once when I was young and stupid. Course I was going downhill...but yeah you’d be surprised what machines will do when you just ...try them....
uhh? Okay I used to have fun at the straight/drag races and maybe 200 mph but can’t run a stock car much more than 160-180 for long periods of time before gaskets and things start blowing.
It’s even worse than you describe because they said this was on the Kirkpatrick Turnpike section — the section that wraps around the north and west side of OK City, LOL.
I had an '85 Capri 5.0L with the air dams and all the go fast stuff glued on. I could get it to about 110mph before the front end made me nervous and I would have to back off the gas.
forgot to mention since the escorts speedo only went up to 80 I had to find out how fast from the Nova going along side me - he’d said I couldn’t top 100...it wasn’t a race he was just there to pace, but he backed off first.
Like I said young and stupid
Yes, I agree. But the hordes of ignorant in the world don’t think about consequences to themselves or others.
Which is why it’s nice to chat here on FR. Thinking FRiends are a refreshing change of pace :)
My 67 with the 435hp engine was like that at 135, only got it up there once. Front end lifted so much is started blocking the road, still accelerating. I wondered later if GM ever tested these cars for stability at the speeds the engines were easily capable of.
The 68 sure looked like it had better top speed aerodynamics, guess not.
