The article I read on CNET?, I think said they wanted better battery life by putting an extra layer or two of cells. The additional compression on the battery stack caused some fatigue at the connection terminals.

The fatigue was causing pinholes in that area allowing the liquid electrolytes to leak and short out.

Regardless, I would have expected bench tests to find this defect...

This is why you
1) Do extensive product testing BEFORE launching a product
And
2) Do NOT ignore the results of the testing if you do not like the results.

I do not believe for a second, that any competent test engineer did not reveal catestrophic design problems with this phone design, that were flagrantly and intentionally ignored.

Since you say it, neither do I.

Challenger launch disaster, anyone?

My Son traded in his Note 7 last nite as he has a flight this morning.

Quick reaction to the news. Do you know what he got instead?

I’ve been nursing a Note 3 in preparation for upgrade to a 7. Looks like I may buy a refurb Note 5.

Samsung will probably be coming out with a Note 8 fairly quickly to try and salvage their market and reputation. If you can nurse the 3 long enough (maybe two more months), let us hope you will be able to get a more modern phone without explosive tendencies. LOL!

He got the Note 5. He said he has rights of return for 12 days and he intends to exchange it for the S7 after his trip.

Already ordered the Note 5. They may indeed come out with the 8 before long. I can wait a while to ensure that the new features of the Note 8 are sufficiently "burned in" and reliable.

What do you bet that the guy in Samsung who was most in favor of the correct cautious approach to the test results is now unemployed!

Big opportunity for phone makers.

I feel bad for Samsung and wow, they will pay. They rushed out a design that wasn’t fully tested. A good lesson for the others.

The financial news yesterday was estimating that this Galaxy Note 7 fiasco was going to cost Samsung between $5 and $6 billion, which would have essentially been their entire profits this year from their cellular phone business. The majority of the profits come from that source, despite having many other divisions including household appliances, ship building, Consumer Electronics division, and an IC foundry. That is disaster.

As for your comments about Tim Cook and his homosexuality, he fails to pay attention to what Steve Jobs taught. . . which was to keep Apple out of politics. Jobs was once asked by a Democrat Party activist why Apple did not make contributions to the Democrat party and candidates. Steve said essentially that half of Apple's customers were Republicans, perhaps a bit less, but he was not going to piss of half of Apple's customer base by making any contributions they wouldn't like, so Apple would stay out of it. Apple did not even have a lobbying presence in Washington!

I agree that Tim Cook is being stupid about that. . . and yes, Apple is probably losing some business due to that. LGBQTQWERTYUIOP group are a minority of the population that is probably less than 1% and the sympathizers are less than 10%, so the market that Apple may gain is illusory, and they are offending a much larger demographic. How much has it affected Apple's bottom line? That is hard to tell.

South Korea can repurpose them in the next Korean War. Twofer. If they still work as phones, great. Good propaganda as they'll be better than any NK phone. If they explode, great weapon!
