Family Bakery Bullied by Militant LGBT Mob Closes

In 2013 - a small family bakery in Northwestern Oregon refused to make a cake for a lesbian wedding.

The owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa had no idea that their decision to follow the teachings of their Christian faith would lead to a multi-year legal battle. It’s a battle still being waged.

Aaron and Melissa Klein were eventually punished by the state of Oregon -- fined $135 thousand dollars for refusing to participate in the lesbian wedding event.

It was the price they had to pay for refusing to violate their conscience.

They also made the painful decision to close their beloved bakery – for good.

Star transport had a policy of swapping loads to accommodate driver’s request if not inconvenient to the company. The admitted their guilt at not allowing the muslims to swap loads.

If they had not had that policy, they would not have been found at fault.

There should have been a buycott for them.

They could have sold cookies and muffins, etc online.

They may have ended up with more business.

They could have even put Christian symbols or verses on the baked goods.

20-odd years ago they asked for tolerance, and I was tolerant. It was a reasonable request to hold society to the same standards that I'd expect for myself.

Now, after a steady drip-drip-drip, all in the name of "Raising Awareness" ... it's safe to say that I'm aware. And, my guess is that there are a right good number of people who are just as aware as I am. We're aware, and paying full attention.

I'll make a prediction that - sooner rather than later - they will prefer to go back to the live-and-let-live tolerance of 20-odd years ago.

The minimum known cost in this case for business owners with religious convictions who are evidently ignorant of their 14th Amendment protections from state abridgment of their constitutionally enumerated rights.

14th Amendment, Section 1: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States [emphasis added]; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Citizens with religious convictions should also note regarding exercising their 14th Amendment protections that Acts 22:23-30 shows that Paul claimed his rights as a Roman citizen to save himself from being flogged.

I’ve said before that the way around this problem is for Christian businesses to get together a group of conservative churches, and make a contract that they will only provide that particular item to couples that go through those churches.

This works because churches can legally discriminate. They can refuse to marry homosexuals.

This would mean that they could sell everything else, all other baked goods, to the public, but wedding cakes are exclusively through these churches. It also cuts out business from secular marriages and liberal church marriages, but that lost business would be smaller.

In this particular circumstance, when the lesbians walked in and tried to order a wedding cake, the bakery could turn them down because of this exclusive contract, saying that their wedding cakes are contractually prohibited from being sold “to the public”.

And breaking contracts like this in court is extremely hard.
