Texas isnt firing Charlie Strong, but it certainly isnt doing him any favors, according to a report that indicates he is very close to losing his job at the end of the season after consecutive losses to Cal and Oklahoma State.
A high-ranking official described Strongs status to SIs Pete Thamel, adding that his job is safe until the end of the season. Strong is in his third season as coach of the 2-2 Longhorns, who wrap up their schedule Nov. 25.

Kirby appears to be struggling as a first year coach. However, unless there is a total collapse, which I do not see, he will be given time to mature and improve the team. Georgia fans are not patient but Kirby is well liked and has good will on his side.
He inherited a dismal offensive line, a,dismal, place, kicking game, no SEC capable defensive rushers, and lots of youth.
He has a great true freshman QB, a couple of freshman receivers. His recruiting this year will probably determine his longevity at UGA.
His name has been floated for every major college opening, but it is all just rumors. He’s not leaving ESPN. If the So. Cal. job opens up, Herman will take it. Otherwise, Herman will be a Longhorn.
Who would be the interim? Bedford? No. Gilbert? Possibly
Might as well wait to see if Charlie Defense can stop the bleeding
Meanwhile, Richt is doing a bang-up job in Miami.
UGA is going to regret the day they let him go.
R O N G !!
...and Herman will bring Major Applewhite with him as his offensive coordinator.
If he manages to win out the season, I say he’ll be around at least another year.
If the race card is played, it won't be by Strong. He's got too much class to pull that. Sharpton, perhaps ... or the online community .... but not Sharp.
They said that last year, too. And ou ain't looking so good this year. Stoops head will be on the chopping block too.
Intentional. Folks that are jealous of Texas tend to do that a lot. They think it's funny, I guess.
I wouldn't be so quick to say that about the game at The Cotton Bowl. Last year, UT was coming off a home loss to Oklahoma State and used it as motivation to take down OU and effectively save Charlie's job last year. History might repeat itself. I do believe that Strong is gone at the end of the year, no matter the outcome against OU.
I watched the Purdue debacle against Maryland Saturday; the Boilers are terrible, and Hazell has lost his team. I saw a lot of “quit” on the field and on the sideline. With only 2 Big 10 wins in four years, and a new AD coming in, he is clearly gone. It’s just a matter of when. Sunday, if they get blown out by a weak Illinois team this Saturday.
I’m an IU grad, but my sons were traitors and went to Purdue, so I have to watch them a lot. At least I can watch them suck.
Proof of Les’ dementia is hiring and keeping Cam Cameron as his offensive coordinator. Cameron is a terrible coach, and has left nothing but losing in his wake wherever he’s been. Why Les hired him, I don’t know.
Yust a Yoke, man....
Gotzitt
Yep. It’s like Muschamp never left.
He was Les’ best man in his wedding. It was easy to see from this past Saturday, what Les was doing to this team. There was no fire among the players, he just went through the motions and collected his 4.3 million a year.
LSU is going to kill us this weekend. We couldn’t even stop Vandy’s running game, I can only imagine what LSU will do.
The biggest problem UT has on the field right now is twofold.
First, the defense has tackled very poorly and especially the young secondary. They are giving up way too many points. Vance Bedford (former UT defensive back) has been relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator and Strong has taken on that role in addition to head coach.
Second, both starting running backs went out with injuries in the last game and UT tried to stay with the run and short passes too long. With an extra week to get ready for the first Big 12 game the result was hard to take.
Having said that, the firing rumors may be as much of a wake up call than anything. Strong been the subject of the same rumor each year he’s been at Texas. At any rate, another poor season like last year may very well end his time at UT. One thing to keep in mind however is that he is an excellent recruiter. Over the last two years UT has signed top classes nationally. Strong’s first recruiting class was a bust but that’s what happens when the new head coach signs late in the recruiting process. Strong coached Louisville for four seasons and the last time I checked, he left that program in pretty good shape.
Can anybody in the Big 12 play defense?
