Owners of the top-loading appliances say the machines exploded while they were doing laundry.
Just days after Samsung began replacing defective Galaxy Note 7s due to a risk of exploding batteries, the company faces another major product issue. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning today after multiple reports of top-loading washing machines exploding. Owners of Samsung appliances in Georgia, Indiana and Texas say that they were doing a load of laundry when they heard a loud boom.
ABC News reports 21 people have submitted cases to the CPSC since early 2015 of washers exploding or blowing apart. One customer in Texas said the explosion had so much force it went through the wall of her garage. Samsung is also facing a class-action lawsuit in New Jersey over the issue.
Following the reports, the CPSC made the formal warning for top-loading Samsung units made between March 2011 and April 2016, but it didn't get specific with model numbers. In a statement on its website, the company says that it's working with US regulators "to address potential safety issues." Samsung says that "in rare cases," the washing machines "may experience abnormal vibrations" when customers are washing bulky items like bedding. Those vibrations might pose a safety risk or could cause property damage, the company explained.
"It is important to note that Samsung customers have completed hundreds of millions of loads without incident since 2011," the statement said.
For now, Samsung recommends that owners use the low-speed delicate cycle when washing "bedding, bulky or water-resistant materials." So far, there haven't been any issues reported while using that setting. Front-loading models aren't affected, but if you own one of Samsung top-loading appliances, you can check to see if you need to take precautions by entering the serial number here.
No, they’ve been making tv’s for years and their QA on those is top notch. A company I worked for automated their production facilities for those.

Two years ago my sister had a new samsung side loader washer. Crapped its guts out after a year.
We’ll be needing a new washer soon and prefer to get a top loader with a standard agitator. Any FReeper recommendations?
So did my grandmother. She had arms like Popeye. She was a sweet woman but none of us grandkids gave her any sass.
We’ve had two Sears washers in 30 years and the smaller one still works.

Sears would be my first choice as those things lasted for a very long time. But with free trade I’m afraid it’ll be chicom crap.

We just bought a GE that’s kinda a hybrid, cross between a water saver and old style.
Has an agitator, skimpy water settings but that can be overridden to get a decent fill. Seems to do a good job. Little noisy though.
We did not want a front load or an expensive washer.
So far satisfied.
Twisting in her hands? She couldn’t even afford manual wringer rollers.

That’s a legitimate concern. In ‘86 when the Sears guys delivered, set-up and did a test wash, they washed the owners manual, all other ppwk and the little box of detergent. It’s in a rental now, still chugging away.

These are the machines designed by the EPA that use four ounces of water for a full load of laundry. I stayed in a place for a few weeks where I had to use one of these worthless machines. After two cycles, a load of underwear was still smelly and visibly dirty.
Trump MUST abolish the EPA.

Yes. Talking like this, shows my age. Sigh. I remember the cast iron bathtub with feet shaped like lion claws, my mom bent over it scrubbing clothes on the scrub board. We had an ice box that I think got filled every week. An ice truck would appear outside, and a man would carry in a huge block of ice and insert it in the top compartment of the ice box to keep our food chilled and we would toss out the accumulated water. In the early 1950s we got the first TV on the block, it was a novelty so neighbors would drop in to see it. Huge console with a tiny screen. Large telephone handset with a thick cord almost as thick as a finger. Very few electric appliances, most things done manually. Life was simple and enjoyable.
Now we are inundated with gadgets and how to divide up our time between them. I guess in the future, people will think back to this time and how they didn't have robots folding their towels etc., and the discussion will be about exploding robots.
Perhaps they were washing Samsung Note 7’s after leaving them in the pockets.....
