JAKARTA – At least 389 climbers, including 333 foreigners, might be still on a volcano near the Indonesian resort island of Bali that had erupted Tuesday afternoon, government officials said.

Mount Barujari on Lombok Island, which is located east of Bali, erupted at 3 p.m. local time Tuesday, spewing volcanic ash as high as 2 km into the air.

The eruption forced the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation to raise the status of the volcano, which is located inside the caldera of bigger Mount Rinjani, to Level 2. Level 4 is the highest alert.

The volcanology agency also recommended people living on the slopes of Rinjani and visitors or tourists not to do any activities inside the caldera of 3,726-meter-high Rinjani and within the radius of 3 km from the crater of 2,376-meter-high Barujari.

“When the eruption occurred, it was estimated that there are still 389 tourists or visitors on Mount Rinjani,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, adding that 333 of them are foreign climbers whose nationalities are still unknown, while the rest are Indonesians.

Never allow yourself to be talked into climbing up on a vertical, freezing cold rock face that goes four miles straight up into a howling, oxygenless sky. Something else for your notebook. :-)

One can learn so much by observing libs while they get high on their pointless acts of near zero-risk bravery that, you can be sure, will never help save the soul nor secure the freedom of a single individual.

Sun that plume collapses anyone who cannot get out of the way of the pyroclastic flows are going to be incinerated in seconds. Anyone near that volcano needs to get out.

I think if you were in 10 miles of it, it was very bad. Particularly downstream of the mud flow.

There was an elder gent, Harry Truman, that refused to leave the area. He, er, his remains, were never found.

Volcano prediction

I was in Yellowstone a few weeks ago at a Ranger talk. The press briefing on the morning of St Helens eruption said nothing was expected to happen that day

Lots of people died because the experts try to give the impression they have a clue. They don’t.

And .. speaking of clues .. SoCal (very near me), has been rumbling up to the 4.3 level off and on for over a week.

However, it is connected to an inward fault which was also responsible for a 7.1 a few years ago.

So far this week .. it has been quiet. I know that because I get automatic emails whenever there is an earthquake anywhere in the USA.

Look Honey, the volcano is erupting!
Ooooooh, let’s get closer so we don’t miss anything
and can get a selfie.

Warning: Watch for poisonous gas and fist size
pieces of flaming debris raining from the sky
and be sure to bracket your shots.

I’ve stood there, and observed the scene.

It is incredible. It looked like the lake was moved a mile downstream. the toothpicks in the water were full grown trees.

The amazing thing was the destruction. Utter destruction: trees torn up and leveled, miles before we even got to the mountain itself.

Won’t a lot of smaller earth quakes slowly release the pent up energy so a larger one won’t occur.

I’ve known it to be either way. Since the recent swarm, we have not had any more.

I guess, only time will tell.
