No one was hurt in a car versus couch wreck on Interstate 86 near Pocatello Regional Airport on Saturday night.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when a motorist heading east on the interstate collided with a large couch that was sitting in the roadway.
State police said fortunately the motorist was not injured but the car suffered heavy damage and was towed from the scene.
Other vehicles struck debris from the couch after the initial impact but were not seriously damaged.
An Idaho Transportation Department crew was called in to remove the couch from the interstate following the wreck.
State police speculate that the large couch somehow fell unnoticed from another vehicle onto the interstate. They said the motorist who initially struck the couch was fortunate not to be injured.
State police were still on the scene of the wreck as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday, but both eastbound lanes of the interstate are open.
DANG!
I guess there is no point in going back and picking up my couch now.
Usually, it is a new mattress flapping on a car roof with a twine tie-down looped through the open car windows.

Must’ve been an old couch. Most new ones don’t even have a hardwood frame and would fly to pieces on impact rather than severely damaging the car.
On the interstate driving out of Boise one foggy morning...bumper to bumper....then BOOM. Horses. Just missed hitting one.
A front porch somewhere in redneckland is missing it’s couch...
Ever since having an empty boat trailer come unhooked in front of me while driving in MN one time I’ve been especially aware of what other people are hauling.
Fortunately the driver was in a car and not on a motorcycle. There should be at least some liability for the driver of a vehicle that dumps objects onto the road.
Once hit a rolled up carpet on my motorcycle at 70mph. Pulled up at impact and landed square. Bent the gear-shift and that was all.
As I sat on the side looking to change underwear, an 18-wheeler came along and avoided the carpet by pulling to the right edge. I ran like the devil away from the bike.
Luckily, he saw me in time and veered back. Really needed a “change” at that point.
Ditto on the motorcycle. The thought gives me nightmares. But if the couch wasn’t licensed, how can liability be charged? Unless something identifying can be found in the crevices under the cushions.
“the car suffered heavy damage”
From hitting a couch? What was is, a Prius?
Once the passenger side seat of a van fell out of the vehicle on I95, right in front of me.
I hit it and it flew into the next lane. No damage to my 8-year-old Chevette ;-)
True, I was thinking more along the lines of the object falling off and the ensuing crash in full view of witnesses. Yes objects on the road can be a nightmare for motorcyclists but I fear the deer a LOT more.
Yer lucky if yer local yokels tie down their stuff cuz round here they just holds on tight and drives slow sorta.
Chevette was my first new car, purchased all by myself, in about 1977. IIRC, it was under $3,000. It was manual transmission, and no AC. Not my favorite car ever, but surely a memorable one.
It was my first new car, too! I bought it in the early ‘eighties, and it lasted me ten years.
Finally developed a bad problem that made it entirely unreliable, and the mechanic I was seeing just told me it was unfixable. An immigrant family in the neighborhood asked me to give it to them instead of junking it; I was hesitant, but I knew that the father was very good at fixing cars. He found the problem - the gas was mixing with oil, or something; and it could have exploded. He fixed it, and his wife drove it for several years more.
It was a great little ‘entry’ car for a young person, back then.
We need “couch-free zones”! Like the partially submerged couch one of the kayakers hit while paddling in the Rio Olympics.
