I can find IE - not easy to find but possible, but it flashes and I get a pop up saying it is looking for a cure, close pop up, repeats. The shame of it is that IE is the only browser that still works with Java.

It’s under Windows accessories.

I use java also. I just open the edge browser and go to the toolbar and click on the three dots all the way to the right and go down to where it says “open in internet explorer”. It’s fairly easy that way.

You can’t replace the drive?

My way of replacing the drive is to buy another laptop. The sad part is that the professional repairman told me the contents of the fried drive are not retrievable. I have not hammered it or anything :) it just overheated like a hillary on a torrid day in September.

Pro repairmen come in all grades I suppose. Is there any hope?

I had to replace the drive in my old Toshiba, but I didn’t have the original Windows 7 os disk. So I called Toshiba and they mailed me one. I took the old drive out, put the new drive in, and loaded Win 7 onto it. Easy peasy.

And there are companies that will retrieve your data, but for a price.

“Warning: Make sure to set the correct device path, as this process will delete all data that was on the specified device previously!”

Someone tell me WHY no one offers a linux that can be installed safely and easily.
Doenload and install one program, get a little icon at the bottom to switch from Windows to linux.
Bingo! Everyone runs from Windows to linux.

Thumb drive installs faster.

There are several utilities to set up the install on USB. Rufus is the best I’ve found.

You can turn off windows update in services and turn it back on to update at your convenience.

I’m still using XP. The only thing I really like about Win 10 is the News App. Win 10 is serious bloat.

How to Disable Cortana in Windows 10’s Anniversary Update
http://www.howtogeek.com/265027/how-to-disable-cortana-in-windows-10/

….you can still disable Cortana via a registry hack or group policy setting. This transforms the Cortana box into a “Search Windows” tool for local application and file searches.

Cortana has become increasingly restrictive since Windows 10’s release. It was previously updated to ignore your default web browser. Cortana now always launches the Microsoft Edge browser and only uses Bing when you search. If that sounds like something you wouldn’t want to use, here’s how to turn it off.

The linux “establishment” is missing a beautiful marketing oppotunity.

The standard install disk offers the choices:

a. Install along side existing operating system.

b. Install instead of existing operating system formatting your disk. All existing data will be lost.

c. Do something else - Custom install

The "Transport Windoze to Linux" command works if and only if you have arranged your directories in Windows in a rational fashion. Personally I've never seen it. YMMV

I installed Red Hat way back when it was ‘hot’ and that was easy to do.
Installing on a thunb drive should be made as easy.

People want to get off W11 but are just scared. “Establishment” needs to spend a few bucks to make it worry-free.

Update:

Just for laughs, decided to let it try to update overnight. Went to bed at 11:00 PM still had the gray screen with the spinning dots. Got up at 5:30 AM today and still had the gray screen with spinning dots.

In disgust I held down the power button then powered back up. Looked like it was going to power up normally then I got the message "attempting to recover installation".

Blue screen comes up then "86% don't turn off your PC- your PC will restart several times".

Twenty minutes later It gets to 100% and reboots. Looks normal, then to a nice pulsing "Hillary shade of blue" screen with a greeting "Hi" and telling me my PC has been updated, getting everything ready, blah, blah blah....

Finally got to my desktop. Email works and Firefox browser works. Now checking everything else. Not sure why it hung up like that all day yesterday and all night but powering off and then on again cured it and apparently the update was successful (for now).

Thanks for all the suggestions.
