Windows 10 update version 1607
Me ^ | 09/22/2016 | Me

How long does this take? Started updating at 10:00 am today. It is now 3:00 pm and I'm at the gray screen with the spinning dots. It already did the 'percent' screen and several restarts. Just wondering how much longer.

Whoa, I feel for you. My PC decided to do it on its own this week and it only took 90 minutes.

Mine stayed at the screen with spinning dots for 3 hours. Yours seems a bit long... Is it an older slower machine?

Be patient. Mine took five hours.

Have you figured out that it is no longer your computer? You can use it when (and if) Microsoft is satisfied it has finished updating.

I guess I am lucky, it only took mine about an hour to download and install.

It’s a very large update that effectively replaces the O/S. Tablets and micro-PCs... especially those with very limited memory resources... will have difficulty getting this done. If you have any means of adding an external memory card or something (16GB or higher, perhaps), then that would certainly help as the update shuffles files around.

Too late to add memory once the update has started? Maybe he can turn off the power, risking a the integrity of the OS and run to the computer parts store. Else, just wait.
Whatever it was he wanted to do when he turned the computer on can just wait. :-(

My SSD drive and 32 gigs of RAM took 15 minutes.

Uh Oh...
That was an update?
I woke up and saw the computer doing the spinny thing. Came back a half hour later and it was still doing it.
I held the power button for 5 seconds to get the computer to shut off.
Now I probably have to do something major to fix it.
For big updates they should announce them ahead of time.

You just think it’s a friendly little update. Instead, it’s updating their data mining from your personal private bought and paid for computer.

I’m moving ALL of my clients into Macs.

Installing Parallels 11 (or later).

Then installing Windows 7 or 8.1.

No issues.

Windows 10 is horrific (whorrific?).

I am a professional computer consultant and instructed for a dozen years in my states university system.

Windows 10 is AWFUL!

I updated a PC a few days ago and it took about 4-5 hours. It’s a backup system, so I wasn’t too upset, but nevertheless, 5 hours??? MS morons.
