A woman who rang Barnstaple Police in Devon was left stumped after being put through to an officer in Barnstable, Massachusetts in the US.
The woman, who's identity is unknown, reported a car accident between Muddiford and Ilfracombe in the UK.
But the confused US officer on the other end of the phone struggled to work out where she was talking about, asking for nearby landmarks.
Eventually the woman realised something was wrong when the officer hadn't heard of Ilfracombe.
The police officer finally worked out what the problem was.
The woman was referring to Barnstaple, England - and he was in Barnstable, Massachusetts.
After explaining that he is in the US, the officer told her: "Our response is going to be about six hours."
The pair shared a laugh before saying their goodbyes.

Uncle Freddy?
I’ll bet the lady had never heard of Mashpee or Teaticket.
Thanks for a great laugh!
Lived in MA 2+ decades. Very familiar with Barnstable and Mashpee...never once heard of Teaticket.
Lol
Could have been a call center in Irkutsk.
I got to go to Cape Cod a few years ago and remember all these names! It’s a beautiful area and I loved all the cute little towns especially on the north side where they try to preserve their heritage and history!
We stayed with friends in a nice house in Falmouth that looked out on the ocean. It was summer time and cool and rainy and it was just beautiful!
Only if they already had an officer in line at the airport!
Shades of "Brannigan" (John Wayne in London) or "Coogan's Bluff" (Clint Eastwood transplanted from AZ to NYC). Watch out for right-hand drives!
British visitor to L.A. wanted to fly back so he booked himself on a Southwest flight to “Manchester”.Wound up in New Hampshire.Good naturedly, airport or airline let him stay (gratis I think) at a nearby hotel then he went the rest of the way back to UK.
LOL
“”Our response is going to be about six hours.”
Well LOl it’s 12 hours over the Atlantic but close..
So the accent differences didn’t faze her, eh?
We put in an answering machine because of all the Foreign calls , LOL
That's funny, LOL! Most towns in New England have the same or similar names of towns in "old" England.
You would think, but what with Britain having so many foreigners moving there it apparently didn’t....
Could the problem be that One on't cross beams gone owt askew on treddle?
But the confused US officer on the other end of the phone struggled to work out where she was talking about, asking for nearby landmarks.
I bet she didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition.
A call from Cthulhu?
