She was really beautiful and I loved the duet with her Father with “Edelweiss”.

I was in AWE of her as a 11 year old girl.

So glad to know she had a normal, happy life.

If I recall correctly she left acting behind soon after being in The Sound Of Music. She could have moved on to many acting roles after that I’m sure. I don’t know why she wanted to leave Hollywood behind.

My Dad once told me he remembered that “The Sound of Music” was in movie theatres for months after it first came out, as it was the perfect movie to go to as a family, etc.

Does anyone here have similar memories about that movie?

Angela Cartwight, "Penny" of the 1960s sci-fi comedy series Lost In Space was in that film also.

“Climb Every Mountain” was our senior class song. Class of 65.

I don’t know why she wanted to leave Hollywood behind.

When I was a little girl, I wanted nothing more than to grow up to be an actress. Then I learned that drug abuse runs rampant in Hollywood. Later, I learned about other unsavory practices. I changed my career goals.

It could very well be that she saw the seedy underside of Hollywood and decided to distance herself from it.

“Does anyone here have similar memories about that movie?”

It was one of the first movies I remember seeing in a movie theater. I was just going to be 5 years old.

I’m 56 now and have seen it countless times. We used to go to the movies as a family whenever there was a Disney film playing.

Want me to sing any of ‘The Sound of Music’ for you? I know ALL of the lyrics by heart!

A REALLY wonderful movie. Well, except for those d@mn Nazis, but at least ONE Hitler Youth did the right thing for love. ;)

The movie can still give me goosebumps (and a blurry screen sometimes) all these fifty years on.

Mom took me to the cinema (one screen, old style) when it first came out on film, and it's only gotten better as our enemies have worked to crumble our society around us.

RIP Charmian .. you were wonderful, especially with Edelweiss .. you will be missed and remembered by millions of us.

I was born in 1964. In school, it was a big thing among the kids and teachers at my school. I never saw it till adulthood, but kids would sing the songs, we sang them in music class etc. It was one of the biggest blockbusters ever - 5th highest gross adjusted for inflation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films

The way TSOM was marketed it came out first in large downtown theaters in large cities. So if you were suburban kid like me, you had to travel to see it. I think Mary Poppins, which had come out the year before, was the same way. I remember seeing both of them in the winter. We got up while it was still dark and went into the city to see them. They even had an intermission. Up to that time I’d only seen one or two other movies at most, so I thought all movies had intermissions. I did know that not all movies had Julie Andrews in them.

In both cases the movies played at the downtown theaters for quite a while before they were released to the suburban theaters. So yes, it was certainly playing for months.

I saw it in 1965 at the movie when it was released. I’ve had the VCR tape now for probably 20 years or so and the wife and I still watch it every so often.
