Fishermen upset over creation of Atlantic's first monument

Fishermen in New England say President Barack Obama needlessly dealt a big blow to their industry when he created the Atlantic Ocean’s first marine national monument and circumvented the existing process for protecting fisheries.

The new Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument consists of nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains off the New England coast. The designation will close the area to commercial fishermen, who go there primarily for lobster, red crab, squid, whiting, butterfish, swordfish and tuna.

After Thursday’s announcement, fishermen pondered their next move: sue, lobby Congress to change the plan or relocate. It’s hard to move, they said, because other fishermen would likely already be fishing where they would want to go.

They said the designation process wasn’t transparent and the administration should have let the New England Fishery Management Council finish working on the coral protection measures it’s considering. …

Maybe the fishermen should become coal miners or oil pipeline erectors.

Can’t have those ugly windmills where a liberal might see them from their back porch of luxury yacht.

My best buddy here in Charlevoix, on northern Lake Michigan is a former commercial fisherman whose extended family fished the Great lakes for over 100 years. His cousin’s still have a fish market here in Charlevoix. Back in the 1980’s, the federal government ruled that they couldn’t fish anymore because Indians(They called them that back then.) had treaty rights extending back decades, which put them out of business. He only recently sold the last fish tug to some guys out of Erie, Pa. to end the familie’s heritage on the lakes.

With all our immigrants and government controls, I wonder when the availability of food will become a BIG issue.

...Congress granted the right to protect these areas to the fisheries councils that manage them.
"For people who live and work on the water, this is terrifying," he said. "This is the government using eminent domain on your workplace..."

Trump should come out and make a statement that he will protect American fishing. (notice that everything American is under attack - from baseball to lobster?)

Commercial fishing is very hard work and so naturally Obama has no understanding of their lives, their labor, or their contributions to the food supply.

The process was transparent.

Obozo promised hope and change.

You got the change part!

Once Trump is inaugurated, we have to get to work on Congress. Congress is a HUGE problem.

Ignore every law made up by obama and his cohorts
If they don't have to abide by the laws including the ones they made up- neither do I.

Commercial fishing federal enforcement is no joke. Obama won’t arrest you, but his cops will.

I caught that, too. They don’t grow in the northeastern Atlantic.

Quit being sheep.

You be the example, please. Go hunting out of season this afternoon, or open-carry in a town that bans it, or just double your speed limit on your way to work.

Shine the light for us all.

Maps I’ve seen of the Florida Key Deer Refuge show it way out into the ocean - is this official, I wonder?

One would think if the issue were truly the canyons, that as long as the nets don’t reach the canyons, it would be OK.

Of course the real issue may actually be shutting down the fishing industry.
