Ever attend the foreign materials intelligence school behind the wire at Aberdeen in MD ? My favorite rifle was the yugo variant of the SVD ..... the FPK in 7.62x54R. Awesome accuracy.....
I have an old enfield with a 7.62x54R “jungle” conversion an old snake eater did for the Burma / Thai conflict...... near Chang Mai (Rai)...... lots of old enfield rifles for the rebels but their supply of .303 ammo was crap. They converted thousands of those enfield to use captured 7.62x54R..... !

Best conversion I’ve made for economical use of the smoothest action on earth shy of the old 30-40 krag Jorgensen which may be slicker than sheep crap on black ice.
I think .260 Rem in a .308-size AR platform would be about perfect out to 1,000 yards. If I lived in TX and had a few grand to lay out for a Larue....
.300BLK is shaping up nicely, comparable to .308 (standard US sniper round) but with excellent subsonic capability (silenced) and usable in the standard AR platform too.
CheyTac (?) .408 is an excellent very long range round, but rather specialized. Better than .50BMG.
Just got an email from Brandon Hall at Larue a few days ago. Forwarding it to your email ...... they are building barrels for LaRue PredatOBR’s soon..... barrels only. Been hounding them since I got mine with a match and standard 7.62x51 barrels....... a few grand ? Try 4 grand, then throw a Schmidt ‘n Bender, Nightforce or Leupold Mk 6 or Mk 8 scope into the added cost. Mine wears a Nightforce 5-25X ATACR that was the cheapest of the four mentioned......:o)
WAY out of my league! I like the concept of a .260 Rem in a big AR with a great barrel though.
Take a gander at Cal Zants Precision Rifle Blog ...... he is a hundred miles south of me ...... excellent engineer and very thorough in his research.
PRB,,,Cool Stuff right there,
RUGER Rifles Rock!
Thanks
Cal’s very good and fair on his research....... great reference site for the precision rifle competitor or long range varmiter .....
Ruger ? Agree .... can’t find that 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Precision Rifle anywhere.... they are very popular right now. Elusive as a 3 ball cat ......
Stay Safe !!
I have my own range out to 900 yards, and I once had a friend bring out his Dragunov. Definitely not what I would call accurate. I think one of the issues is the rimmed cartridge. I’m assuming that it headspaces on the rim. If so, that’s not good for accuracy. I would also take issue with the authors claim of it being the most accurate rifle in the early cold war. I can tell you that the American M14 with M118 ammo is good for 1,000 yards.
Actually, there is a difference between the two. I have two .308win rifles with target chambers that won't even begin to chamber a 7.62x51 round. I also have a HK91 that will blow primers out of their pockets and create an unsafe condition if you try to shoot .308win ammo in it. However, I have two m14/M1a rifles that seem to be comfortable shooting either ammo.
But yes, the Russians are playing catch-up. There are many American rifles (even .308/7.62 caliber) that will still outshoot their newest offering.
There is an unspoken reason, too. In time of ‘war’, ol’ Josef comes across some left behind, or battle-strewn NATO rounds. Jackpot!
