California health officials on Friday urged travelers returning home from the Olympics as well as countries where Zika is spreading to continue to wear insect repellent and to practice safe sex for several more weeks, to help prevent the spread of the virus in the Golden State.
While Zika is spread primarily through the bite of the black-and-white-striped Aedes mosquito, the virus also can be passed through sex, health officials said.
They are mostly concerned with people returning home from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, because Brazil has been hit hard by the virus.
Continue using insect repellent to prevent spreading the virus to mosquitoes in your community upon your return and refrain from unprotected sex so you dont pass the virus to your partner, Dr. Karen Smith, director for the California Department of Public Health, said in a statement.
So far, the mosquito that carries the virus has been found in a dozen California counties, including in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Orange counties.

The total number of travel-associated Zika cases has jumped statewide by almost 50 percent in the last three weeks, from 114 recorded on July 29 to 170 by Friday, according to the states department of public health. The state began recording cases last year.
Health officials said couples should use condoms for at least eight weeks after travel. Men who have tested positive for Zika should use condoms for six months to prevent transmission to their partners, they added.
Travelers returning from an affected region should also continue using insect repellent for three weeks to prevent the virus from spreading to mosquitoes, which might then infect others, according to the health department.
Health officials are especially concerned about pregnant women. Two babies in California were recently born with microcephaly, a birth defect that can be caused by Zika. Both women who gave birth tested positive for the virus.

Now they tell everyone. What could possibly go wrong??
California Zika continues to climb : 505 in a little over 2 weeks via "TRAVELERS"
The world needs lots of DDT.
“Silent Spring” ESAD!
California authorities attribute the rise due to 'travelers' to infected areas.
At least there is no known "native" infestation.
Yes, you are right, Rio travelers coming back from the Olympics could begin a regional infestation.
More about the Zika virus is being learned, almost daily .
Just ignore it! It’ll go away! /sarc
I would love to see the correlation between the party affiliation and infected travelers. I might not care about this story. (Until they start giving it to innocent people).
It apparently leads to dementia in normal adults. It’s not quite the mild virus I thought it was.
An interesting article:
Zika: Brazil Admits Its Not the Virus by Dr. Mercola:
http://wakeup-world.com/2016/08/18/zika-brazil-admits-its-not-the-virus/
Quite true, as there appear to be issues found in adult brains that have been infected. I do not agree with their analysis, but am willing to consider their position, since much is being learned each day of investigation.
Due to Virus simple construct of RNA (not DNA) the viri are subject to environmental influences, and in their natural state, viri will readily mutate.
The Brazilian agricultural environment was using a specific insecticide to kill mosquitoes; the adjoining Columbia did not use this specific insecticide.
I personally believe that the Brazilian Zika is a mutated variety which causes microcephally; whereas the Columbian Zika had a statistically insignificant occurrence of microcephally.
This is what leads me to believe that it is only the Brazilian variety, impacted by environmental chemicals/insecticides that has mutated,
and now has a certain impact on the infected human population.
For further information , see:
http://medicalxpress.com/news/2016-08-zika-infection-affect-adult-brain.html
where it states :
" ..new research in mice from scientists at The Rockefeller University and La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology suggests that certain adult brain cells may be vulnerable to infection as well. Among these are populations of cells that serve to replace lost or damaged neurons throughout adulthood, and are also thought to be critical to learning and memory."
"This is the first study looking at the effect of Zika infection on the adult brain," says Joseph Gleeson, adjunct professor at Rockefeller, head of the Laboratory of Pediatric Brain Disease, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. "Based on our findings, getting infected with Zika as an adult may not be as innocuous as people think."
Please see my post #11 , in response
But those infected with ZIKA, in any of the Caribbean islands, give birth to microcephalic babies too.
Makes ready-made democrat voters.
Yes, and that demonstrates my point that the Zika in Brazil which is related to microcephally, is different that the Zika found in neighboring Columbia in terms of effects.
I believe it has to do with mutation as a result of exposure to insecticide/ pesticides used in Brazil.
You don't hear of microcephally in the mainland Zika exposure, only in the connective island chain, further demonstrating a virus mutant.
What is the variable between mainland and the island exposure : the frequency of travelers on island hopping cruise ships.
Even today, California is reporting an increase in transmissions, although no currently known native exposure, all brought about by international travelers.
Expect more of the same when travelers return from the Rio Olympics, and those on cruise ships.
It has to be more than that because I don’t think ever victim would see symptoms or be tested by a Doctor.
And there are a few cases of sexually transmitted ZIKA, in NYC, in people who have NOT traveled outside of our shores.
