Michael Phelps gave his baby son Boomer a kiss as he added two more Olympic gold medals to his record total on Tuesday night after leading Team USA to victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay less than an hour after defeating his arch nemesis Chad Le Clos.

Phelps made up for one of the rare losses in his brilliant career by seeing off rival Le Clos to win the men's 200m butterfly - and his twentieth Olympic gold medal, which he later admitted it was 'revenge' for 2012.

'There was so much emotion and so much build up for that race,' Phelps later said of the race. 'I don't want to say it's revenge, but that's what it was.'

The most decorated Olympian in history has apparently never forgiven the South African upstart for prizing away 'his' title in the event by five hundredths of a second in London 2012.

Give it up! Apparently, the man went through a spell of stupid, but it appears that he has stopped that part of it.

“Swimming times have radically improved over the past 30 years. I had the distinction of being the first to break a minute in long course. That is nothing today. “

I grew up in Brooklyn. Lived across the street from the Trump Construction Company. Fred Trump was gracious enough to donate one of the buildings garages for a club house for the neighborhood kids. We had parents who coached us in sports and in life. Each season we broke out into teams and played sports. Basketball and hockey in the winter. Baseball in the spring and across it all was Monday night swimming at Lincoln High School.

We had professional athletes come to our awards ceremony at Colonial Mansion. (I know, only Brooklyn people will understand the references) Back in the early 60’s, when I was 6, Gerry Philbin from the Jets presented me with the rookie of the year award for hockey. I was always active in sports and was pretty good, but not great at every sport I played. One thing I loved to do in the summer was go fishing off the jetties at Brighton Beach in the morning, then I would swim between the jetties off Bay 1 and Bay 2.

My high school tryout in 1975 was the 100 freestyle. A few days earlier one of the swimmers on the team bet me I couldn’t break a minute. I swam it in 56 seconds. When I touched the wall, I looked up and everyone was just staring at me. Coach looked down at me and said, “you are on the team.” I looked up at him and said, “only reason I tried out was because someone bet me I couldn’t break a minute.”

For the next week, every swimmer and coach pleaded with me to join the team. I joined. I was up before dawn, going to the beach to swim and after school swimming in the pool for another two hours with the team. The seniors on the team along with the coach thought it was a good idea to welcome me to the team by hazing me. I quit that afternoon.

Yea, he should have quit training for the Olympics and just be a dad.

My gosh what passes for showing the love of Christ these days... After all, that months old baby is totally going to hear the message of Christ.

He actually named his kid “Boomer”?

Maybe he'll name his next kid, "Sooner".

I hear you... I swam from the late 70s and stopped in the early 90s. Was lucky enough that parents had resources to cover coaching/travel, but (thankfully in hindsight) my parents insisted I had a full time job in the summer to defray the costs. I still remember one particular week after my senior yr in high school where us distance swimmers swam 100k in the week plus weight sessions... while I was working commercial landscaping between practices. At this time, one of the 1980 team members was still training with the senior team vs the masters program... still putting himself through the grind while he was studying to become a dentist. Really helped me keep things in perspective in more ways than one.

Quit training? It takes about two minutes to get married.

After training ALL day, he could come home to his lawfully wedded wife and their child. Why didn’t he do that?

I’m not sure that is correct - maybe for swimming. I believe there have been older winners and meddlers in Archery, shooting events, and maybe biathlon (though that is winter).

Actually 54 year old Philip Dutton just took a bronze in equestrian - individual event if you don’t count the horse (LOL).

Magnificent body, one of the all-time great American athletes ever. Little chance of becoming a woman in his old age...

I saw him swim the final leg of the 4 x 200 and he could barely climb out of the pool.

Agreed, he is the greatest olympian ever. He also swam the final leg an hour after the 200 fly.

Not defending Phelp’s pre-marital baby. He is on a journey, though, and one can hope that his impending marriage will be a good Christian one, despite it’s origins.

There is not one speck of fat on that body, nor any of the swimmers in these photos — long muscles formed from years of swimming. Gorgeous! (I’m a female and an artist.)

He actually named his kid “Boomer”?

I was interested to notice in one of the photos the special ear covers to protect the baby, presumably during the roaring of the crowd. Here's a closer view:

Interesting link, thanks. Looks like the great majority of our multiple medalists have been swimmers.
