Which state has the worst drivers in the U.S.?

When you get cut off, stuck behind a slow poke in the passing lane or see someone whizzing by at 90 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, it's tradition to check the license plate and say, "No wonder--they're from such-and-such state."

Now there's a study that gives credence to that claim.(snip)

Here's a list of the worst, and the reasons why:

1. Florida. Floridians Google "speeding tickets" and "traffic tickets" more than any other state. They also have the second lowest number of insured drivers in the nation.

2. Mississippi. The state had the fifth-highest number of deaths resulting from auto accidents and the 12th highest rate of DUI arrests per driver in the country. Like Florida, relatively few people are insured.

3. Oklahoma. When it comes to states with many uninsured drivers, Oklahoma has more than its fair share: Only 74 percent of its drivers are insured. It also has one of the 15 worst scores in DUIs per thousand drivers and the number of people killed per thousand drivers in auto accidents.

4. New Jersey. The Garden State has the second-most deaths per driver.

5. Delaware. New Jersey's neighbor and rival for worst drivers in the mid-Atlantic region, Delaware is the only state with more deaths per driver than New Jersey.

6. Alabama. This state has bad scores all around.

7. Vermont. It leads the nation in DUIs per driver with 50 per thousand drivers.

8. Tennessee. The state is one of the least insured states in the country, with 20 percent of drivers not having car insurance. Tennessee also has the 18th highest number of deaths per thousand drivers.

9. Texas. It has the highest percentage of deaths from drunk driving at 40 percent.

10. Nevada. Nevada is the third-worst state for traffic and speeding tickets, as well as being the 17th worst state for DUIs.

You didn’t shut your eyes, what’s wrong with you? To ride a cab in Southern Italy you need be either s faced drunk or keep your eyes shut. You do not want to know what’s going on outside that cab.

And what’s that tunnel you go into (or used to) when coming out of Logan that splits in two very abruptly with traffic shooting through there at interstate speeds? Of all the major cities, Boston seems the worst to me but it may be the way the city itself is arranged. Not car-friendly. Abrupt changes to the roads, confusing names, narrow downtown streets. Drivers with zero patience.

NYC is probably worse, but I can’t say about driving there, I never even bothered to rent a car, I always took a cab or my employer had a contract black car service. I know I’ve had some thrilling cab rides into Midtown from LaGuardia.

“it’s tradition to check the license plate and say, “No wonder—they’re from such-and-such state.”

LOL

I curse under my breath when I see ANY out-of-state license plate and say something like, Go back to ( state, usually a yankee-b*tch state )! We do not want you down here, anyway! ;-)

Boston wasn’t built for cars. It was built for horses. :)

When I was still driving long haul I was stuck in evening traffic in Boston.
A driver on the radio was complaining about the traffic, I told him to count his blessings because he could have been in Atlanta.

In Atlanta they wreck when it’s raining, when it’s not raining, at night and daytime.

I got caught in a five mile backup on the bottom side of the Atlanta loop.
Called on the cb for anyone to check the mile marker on the accident.
Driver going the other way said there wasn’t a wreck, just a state trooper giving someone a ticket.

That is traffic in Atlanta.

LOL - just about. Rome (or any large Italian city) is absolutely crazy. I refuse to drive there and just put my fate in the hands of the cabbie. I assume he doesn’t want to die any more than I do.

Same here in California. An 81 year old man we knew well was killed last week by a drunk driving Mexican.....who had already received 2 DUI’s before the accident.

You nailed it on the Texas “yahoo Cowboys” and their dam pickem-up trucks. Worst left-lane campers I have ever seen.

Here, the big lifted diesel truck drivers like to "roll coal" on you. They'll drag along until traffic backs up, then floor it for a giant cloud of black smoke worthy of an old steam locomotive, and laugh about it.

9. Texas. It has the highest percentage of deaths from drunk driving at 40 percent.

Forty percent of what?

One of the indignities Iowans used to - maybe still do - put up with was the lecture from a WI state trooper about how WI teaches its citizens to drive correctly, the implication being that Iowans are incapable of doing so. Ironically, most NE Iowa drivers regard a WI plate as a warning to be on guard for boneheaded motoring.

That being said, many years ago, there were areas of Iowa my parents used to specifically ridicule for clueless driving, and I particularly remember that seeing a Calhoun County plates would generally cause my dad to exclaim, "Look out, it's from Calhoun County!"

This article is crap. Why cite the 15th worst of some factor or another when 14 states are worse?

Also, I suspect that a lot of states have a lower number of insured drivers than Florida, just because they have much smaller populations.

IN general Americans are the best drivers in the world. It is just most people have never driven in the third world or in some European cities and have no idea. We teach defensive driving which is foreign concept in most of the world.

What a coincidence! Whenever my lane is ending (usually
right lane) and I find myself passing the slow poke in
the #1 lane (left lane) who should have been in the slow
lane to begin with, I think: Colorado driver.

Some friends of mine are going to Rome in about a week and their first day they have rented a taxi for the entire day.

I can’t wait to hear about it.

My last driving experience was 20 years ago. There were two types of drivers: those driving like bats out of h#ll and those standing in the middle of the road for three hours waving their hands at each other after a fender bender.

Bar closing time, band leader is saying good night...”Don’t forget, folks, our state was #2 in the country for DUI arrests last year. So have another drink, and let’s go for that #1 spot!

Have never been to any gas station in Texas that doesn’t also sell beer complete with a small brown bag to cover your can. Best to assume that most everyone you meet on the highway has had at least one. Better safe than sorry.
