Which state has the worst drivers in the U.S.?
CBS News ^ | 8/8/2016 | Ed Leefeldt

When you get cut off, stuck behind a slow poke in the passing lane or see someone whizzing by at 90 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, it's tradition to check the license plate and say, "No wonder--they're from such-and-such state."

Now there's a study that gives credence to that claim.(snip)

Here's a list of the worst, and the reasons why:

1. Florida. Floridians Google "speeding tickets" and "traffic tickets" more than any other state. They also have the second lowest number of insured drivers in the nation.

2. Mississippi. The state had the fifth-highest number of deaths resulting from auto accidents and the 12th highest rate of DUI arrests per driver in the country. Like Florida, relatively few people are insured.

3. Oklahoma. When it comes to states with many uninsured drivers, Oklahoma has more than its fair share: Only 74 percent of its drivers are insured. It also has one of the 15 worst scores in DUIs per thousand drivers and the number of people killed per thousand drivers in auto accidents.

4. New Jersey. The Garden State has the second-most deaths per driver.

5. Delaware. New Jersey's neighbor and rival for worst drivers in the mid-Atlantic region, Delaware is the only state with more deaths per driver than New Jersey.

6. Alabama. This state has bad scores all around.

7. Vermont. It leads the nation in DUIs per driver with 50 per thousand drivers.

8. Tennessee. The state is one of the least insured states in the country, with 20 percent of drivers not having car insurance. Tennessee also has the 18th highest number of deaths per thousand drivers.

9. Texas. It has the highest percentage of deaths from drunk driving at 40 percent.

10. Nevada. Nevada is the third-worst state for traffic and speeding tickets, as well as being the 17th worst state for DUIs.

Rhode Island drivers are definitely among the worst.

Whenever I see a driver go into a lane that's about to end and try to see how many cars they can pass before they run out of pavement, I think: California driver.

When I see a driver who keeps passing on the right after running out of pavement, I think: Chicago area.

OH, this is so funny! I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, about 10 minutes from the Delaware border. We have a running gag that if a car is being driven erratically, too fast, or otherwise irresponsibly, the driver must be from Delaware. We wait until the car passes us to view the license plate, and lo and behold! EVERY SINGLE TIME! :-D

I haven’t been to Pennsylvania since 2009, but I don’t recall the roads being an issue, perhaps because I live in Massachusetts. Our roads are full of potholes.

When I see cars driving 80 mph in the emergency lane/apron, I think Boston.

Massachusetts followed closely by Jersey.

“”9. Texas. It has the highest percentage of deaths from drunk driving at 40 percent.”

This is how we cull the herd.””

Check the last names of those picked up for DWI, there is a common link.

I stay away from old men wearing hats and driving Buick’s no matter what state I’m in. I hate getting stuck behind them when I’m in a hurry to get somewhere.

The criteria for "worst" is obviously drummed up by some crazed safety Nazi.

Since when does speeding make drivers worse? Worse than texting soccer moms?

Not the ones I’ve seen. When I regularly did the I-95 route between NY and DC, every single time that some jerk was jamming up the passing lane creating miles of locked-up traffic behind them, it was someone with a Massachusetts plate. Every single time.

Lived in Mississippi, Texas and NY tri srare. I concur with above. So strange how drivers are just more obnoxious and rule bending just over the outer ridge crossing. And forget Texas got hit six times minding my own business at standing position. Stop light whatever. Saw three accidents per day commuting.

New York and Virginia hands down the worst. Connecticut drivers are a close third.

New York drivers love to drive 10-15 miles per hour under the speed limit in the left lane then gun it when you try to go around on the right.

Massachusetts and New Jersey Drivers best.

North Carolina gets my vote. During my three years there I never once saw anyone use a turn signal

Jeff Foxworthy said, "If you see a car with a directional signal on in the south, it was likely purchased that way."

And it is usually a BMW driver....

1. Louisiana - clueless, inconsiderate and reckless. 2. Texas - big boys drive big pickup trucks with zero regard for other drivers. 3. Alabama - in the 4 years I have lived here I have seen ONE car pulled over for speeding - the other 10 million got away with it. 4. Mississippi - again clueless, reckless and feckless - with crummy cars to boot. 5. Florida - act like there is no such thing as turn signals OR brakes!

Roman cab drivers offer their fares a blind fold.

Had a driver in Rome tell me that Romans are the second craziest drivers. He said the worst are in Naples.
