Hi All,
For those of you that use Norton to protect your computer, I have a question.
I am currently experiencing a dreadfully long (manual) full system scan. It used to take no longer than a couple of hours. Now, I can start it before I go to bed and it is still not complete in the morning. The only difference I can see is that this started happening after upgrading to Windows 10. So far, this has been the only issue I am experiencing since upgrading to Windows 10.
I have tried researching this online and in the Norton Forums, but I either can't find a similar issue or the issue is not showing as being resolved in the forum.
Anyone have experience with this? Anyone have a clue how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!
I dumped Norton years ago. Try it you will enjoy not have it.
I’ve never had a problem with Norton before.
I am happy with Kaspersky. If I don’t use that, I will use AVG.
One morning, a window popped open and said it was happening, giving me no way to stop it. I am wondering if it is a virus.
This post right here is the best advice.
Avast or AVG are much faster and more effective than Norton.
And they’re free.

Norton was formerly on top of the industry, but now it’s got a very bad reputation, and rightfully so.
Well, if it “suspends” while you sleep, how do you know it is scanning slowly?
Say it suspends at 60% of the full-scan. In the morning, when you “wake-up” the PC, the scan restarts from that 60% point. capice?

I don’t know about it being a virus. Sounds more like a Windows Big Brother issue to me. ;-)
If I were to change it, what do you suggest as a good amount of time for power saver? And should I re-set it to a shorter time after the scan/set it to longer time before scan?
Yup, the virus called Windows 10.
Well, I’ll probably get smacked-around by the local nerds for telling you this but, my personal settings for my PC sleep mode is NEVER and I keep it running constantly (unless Bill Gates drops by and wants to tweak my machine) My monitor setting is NEVER and power it off when I walk away from the desk. My laptop (with WIN10) is the same setup.
I won’t give you sleep-time settings. You’ll have to experiment. What I will do is agree with many of the respondents here, get rid of Norton (or IMO, TrendMicro or Kaspersky), memory hogs.
That said, I don’t usually do any wide range surfing; I stay limited to very few sites and even fewer “commercial” sites.
I use Malwarebytes, SuperSpyware and AVG-Free. (AVG is set to scan incoming email to my Outlook) My full-system scan takes about 45 mins, max. All they ever find is tracking cookies. I’m pretty happy with that combo.
YMMV
I will check my computer at home to be sure, but I believe they are under the “scan” section of Norton. There you will find a section named “scan logs” and in that section there should be an option to delete.
It’s been a while since I did it so I will check at home and give you a more detailed response.
I gave up Norton long ago. Avast is great and free. Couple that with Malwarebytes also free and you are good to go.
I had the same issue on another computer that was forced to “update” last year.
I wiped everything and then did a “clean” install of Windows 10 from Windows 7, and haven’t had a problem since I must admit. It was very annoying though.
Critical note: I did not instal the latest video drivers for my video card before updating to Windows 10 the second time. So if you try the wipe and clean install, don’t update any drivers before updating to 10. After 10 is installed the latest drivers from NVIDIA seem to work fine. But not before; that seems to have been my issue the first time.
Hope that helps.
Windows 10 comes with its own antivirus/antispyware program called Windows Defender. My guess is that running Norton is causing a conflict.
Click the Windows logo or press the Windows key on the keyboard.
Type “security” (without the quotes).
Under “Best match” you should see “Security and Maintenance,” click it to open it.
Expand the Security section and tell us what you see there.
I actually think you are on to something here. I just reset mine to NEVER and will see what happens. I may have to do two scans because when I started the scan, it appears to first be completing the last one I canceled (it started at file number 200,000+).
Norton is a virus. The Norton bastards push it on the PC manufacturers, piggy-back it with software you actually want. After you uninstall it it leaves files scattered all over the place. Anyone running Norton is a chump.
It chews up memory as well.
CC Cleaner gets rid of a lt of old log and temp files too.
