Good move... the first (flag) logo is too complex, chaotic, confusing.
“Clean and clear” is always better... and a new design is likely to yet be adopted (there are great designers out there), though not necessary, imo.

Having an iconic logo helps the campaign.I guess. What was Reagan's, or Bush the Elder's, or Bush the Younger's? I don't remember the last Republicans to win the Presidency having one or at least, it was not so memorable as to make an impression.

The logo would have been pretty easy to fix. Make the stem of the T pass over the P so it looks like it is laying on top of it.
