There are just 6 plots in every film, book and TV show ever made: Researchers reveal the 'building blocks' of storytelling

From Harry Potter and Romeo and Juliet to the stories of Oedipus and Icarus, almost every tale told conforms to one of just six plots, researchers have claimed.

A major new analysis of over 1,700 stories identified the core plots 'which form the building blocks of complex narratives'.

Researchers used complex data-mining to locate words linked to positive or negative emotion in each story to reveal the set of arcs.

An emotional arc is similar to a plot building block that tells a story by generating an emotional response from the reader, reports MIT Review.

For example, 'man falls into hole, man gets out of hole' or one of the most well-know, 'boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl'.

I think their plots are in a category all their own—one that might have crashed their algorithm.

Where there’s a Will, there’s a Dr. Smith...or a robot...or maybe a relative.

My favorite is the Golden Girls. I love how it makes Betty white look young when I watch it now. She was a spring chicken then, lol. They are all hilarious, and sometimes there is a good life lesson as well.

There’s 3:
man vs man
man vs nature
man vs himself

There’s actually a bunch of these lists, some as high as 12. It’s really about how you want to label your boxes then putting everything in one.

True but I will say Burr was very good as Mason and Ironside.

And not bad up against Godzilla...

The only true Godzilla movies are the ones with the guy in the rubber suit and the toy cars that get flung around as well.

Who wrote the title is another idiot. This has nothing to do with “plot”.

All this says is that the structure of all stories follow 6 basic structures which is either succeed, fail, or a combination of the two.

Yeah, big deal. Any time you attempt something the only outcomes are succeed or fail at any given time. So a book shows the main character succeed, then fail, then ultimately prevail.

That has NOTHING to do with plotting, which is a good big more complicated.

Beyond this, this is only 1 facet of story telling. They are using but 1 single category and applying all stories to this one category.

OK, I can say every story is about a male, or a female, or both. There is a second category.

Here is a third. Every story is about an external conflict, or an internal confict, or both. A character can face an external conflict, then take on an internal conflict, and finally another external conflict.

This article is beyond worthless. They make it sound like all stories ever told fall into 6 plots. Sorry. Just because story structure falls into only 6 cases doesn’t mean a stories can be so conveniently categorized.

What a worthless piece of tripe and waste of money.

What is sad is the most popular shows have 1 plot, so the masses of stupid people don’t have to think too hard.

Three’s Company had 1 plot. Somebody would overhear and misunderstand something and cause chaos until it was cleared up to be nothing big in the closing minutes of the show.

This was the only plot that Three’s Company ever used. Ever.

Yes. That is where you get the “rising” vs “slowly rising” plots.

So, anybody remember the cowboy movie that was a dead on repeat of “Sahara”.

In Sahara, an isolated US tank commanded by Humphrey Bogart is trying to escape enemy lines to reconnect with their unit. They take on an Italian and a German prisoner, then end up fighting an entire German army in the end.

I once saw a cowboy movie where they used the same script and set and everything right down to the adobe building in the end, but they were on a wagon and took on an Indian boy and an ex-convict and fought an entire Indian warrior tribe in the end.

I mean this was almost scene for scene and word for word. Pretty funny...
