A jury has found a former Vanderbilt football player guilty on all charges for his role in the rape of an unconscious woman.

Brandon Vandenburg was found guilty by the jury in Nashville of raping the woman who he was dating at the time in his Vanderbilt dorm room three years ago.

The jury took four hours to make their decision and delivered their verdict just after 8.20pm local time.

Vandenburg now faces a potential jail sentence of up to 25 years and was taken into custody as soon as the verdicts were read out while his parents began to cry.

Public executions used to be a family affair-picnic lunch and everyone watched as justice was done. It is such a foreign concept to us now that it seems barbaric and bizarre. Yet I imagine it worked as a strong deterrent for children to see the result of choosing evil.

Perhaps we should bring it back.

Colleges can sponsor sports farm teams without pretending these borderline dull/imbeciles are “students,” and they can stay off campus and out of trouble, where they belong.

Basketball and football teams should be "for profit" and pay the players.

I agree with both of you. I used to work for a guy who was a raving University of Michigan fan.

He never studied there and the only time he stepped foot on campus was to head to the stadium. That didn’t keep him from spending everything he had on blue and yellow stuff, including a customized van.

It was insane and a lesson I learned early in life about idolatry.

Colleges that are wrapped around their sports programs are doing a disservice to the actual students.

My son goes to a small engineering university. Virtually every student is there solely for the academics. There is no sports program unless you count the intramural ultimate Frisbee team which has an annual budget of $400. My son is team treasurer.

The school has virtually zero behavioral issues. The Dean of Students reports that their biggest problem is one or two cases of plagiarism a year. Joe Biden would love the place.

I do tend to agree that big time sports ruins the academic environment and the big sports guys are given way too much adulation and latitude, which in their minds justifies this heinous activity.

I’ve always been of the opinion that convicted rapists should be executed.

Sports is big money to a number of colleges/universities. I
believe we have to look at the bigger picture, which in my opinion, it is the lowering of values, morals, etc. When I grew up like many here- we had parents and grandparents who went to church or usually at least one did and kids learned the ten commandments, plus we had fathers who damn sure had rules. When I played football in high school in the early-mid 60’s, we behaved as we had an asst. principal who would paddle that ass. I damn sure did not want to see him. Obama and his Czars are making little boys into fags every chance they can. They are pushing this sick LGBT BS and the Bible has been outlawed in schools etc. This nation is becoming more and more like Sodom and Gomorrah. We have to stick with Trump.

I sincerely believe that these athletic programs need to be abolished and basically be removed. Universities should be about learning, not extending the high school glory years for oversexed athletes.

Harvard athletic program was established in 1852...

Harvard Athletics Mission Statement

Education through Athletics Athletic participation helps our students grow, learn, and enjoy themselves while they use and develop their personal, physical, and intellectual skills. Harvard values the lessons that have long been taught by athletic participation: the pursuit of excellence through personal development and teamwork, ethical and responsible behavior on the field and off, adherence to the spirit of rules as well as to their letter, leadership and strength of character, and sportsmanship – respect for one’s opponents, acceptance of victory with humility, and acknowledgement of defeat with grace. In teaching these lessons to its students, Harvard instills habits which will lead students to better and healthier lives. While winning is not an end in itself, we believe that the efforts by our intercollegiate athletes to be their best will lead them to succeed throughout their lives.

I disagree. We need to get back to One Nation under God and the values and morals we learned in Church and from our parents. The Bible is the main book this Nation’s founding father’s believed in.

Aren't fraternities and sororities fully privately organized and funded organizations?

Maybe that is what needs to be done with athletics on the college level. They could be fully privatized and owned privately. They could pay private fees to the college for use of the school's name and facilities.

Essentially and fundamentally, K-12 and state university sports teams ( other than intramural) are farm teams for the big leagues that are supported by the taxpayers.These teams are a tail that wags the dog in many many ways.

You wouldn’t need to ban the programs. Just require that the teams have the same breakdowns as the student bodies, race, ethnic, and perhaps gender. Let’s see basketball teams that are, for example, 60 per cent white and 30 percent yellow.

Why 25 years in this case and six months for that rapist behind the dumpster?

Why 25 years in this case and six months for that rapist behind the dumpster?

The rapist behind the dumpster wasn't charged with felony rape...( he was initially, but that charge was dropped) he was charged with felony sexually assault, a much lighter sentence.....

The kid got off too light..

This douchebag of a person set his own unconscious girlfriend up and facilitated the act to be raped by three other guys...

In this case 25 years was too light a sentence...

Anybody who does that doesn't deserve to breath the free air...

i think that’s what happened. Did he know from the moment he got out of the car that they were planning to rape her?

doen’t really matter. He didn’t try and stop them so he’s wrong and he’s done.

Picking three black guys for your best buddies in college when you’re white. Great idea. He can think about that for the next 25 years.

Fraternities, and sororities are a tradition

That's one tradition I shunned and did just fine without.

here are many people in college who fit the description you’ve portrayed;

Nonsense. Only affirmative action darlings and athletes are admitted to colleges without qualifications. Both classes need to be denied admission.

Remedial education is not a college’s function;

Plenty of colleges offer remedial education, and given the wide variation of secondary education across the country it is both necessary and proper. These "student" athletes "pass" those classes even when they fail them.

if they are illiterate, then shut down lower education and jail the parents, where the real villains are...

You have an alarmingly poor grasp of the size of the problem if you think a self-perpetuating education bureaucracy, a protect-deadbeats-at-all-costs union, and a money-no-object populace aren't every bit as complicit in our primary and secondary education issues as "bad parents."

in actuality, all education has become an anachronism, and now exists for the sole purpose of turning out perfect little statists who will toe the governmental line without question;

Paranoid nonsense.

true coursework will be, and already has been, sanctioned out of existence,

More paranoid nonsense.

and social justice indoctrination will become the law of the land...but, by all means, let’s shut sports down...

Nobody is talking about "shutting sports down." Baseball doesn't need college farm clubs, and neither do football and basketball. If colleges want to sponsor teams they can do that without letting these barbarians behind their gates. They aren't students. Pretending they are is corrupt and immoral.

Non-athletic dopers aren't admitted to college unless a) they meet minimum admissions standards or are b) affirmative action tokens.

The latter class should be eliminated along with "student" athletes.
