A better question is why is Islam at the top of the grievance pyramid? It has to outrank everything else otherwise other victim rights groups would justifiably demand its removal from the protected list. It literally is against the rest of the pyramid.
Some might suggest that it is demonic influence. That if God cannot fulfill his promise to the Jews, that evil will win.

Everything progressives say they oppose—misogyny, homophobia, religious fundamentalism, religious violence, racism, tribalism, anti-Semitism (though I am not sure progs care about this), and even income inequality—they will find in their purest forms throughout the Muslim world. I have brought this up to a few of them and all I get is accusations of Islamophobia or mealy-mouthed equivocation (i.e., “Christianity is bad too!”). Pathetic.
They and islam both hate Christianity and want to eliminate it.
As an example, the “rape is about power, not sex” people. My own opinion is that if the male has an erection, then it's about sex. That doesn't mean it can't be about power, too. The two not only are not mutually exclusive, but are intertwined like a backlash on a fishing reel.
The shooter may have been crazy, on drugs, a run-of-the-mill hater of gays, whatever. He was also a muzzie, and dedicated the act to ISIS. The other motivations, if they exist, do not eliminate, or even dilute, this motive.
I think leftists can be divided into 5 basic groups:
1. Current Bosses (top party leaders in existing socialist countries)
2. Wannabe Bosses (they imagine that they someday will be a Current Boss in a socialist country, this includes lower-level apparatchik in existing socialist countries and dream-scheming leftists in places like the US, where socialist bosses don’t yet have total control)
3. Resigned Apparatchik (lower-level apparatchik in existing socialist countries who realize they are never going to be Current Bosses but have resigned themselves to being cogs in the socialist machine, and see no future for themselves outside of that machine)
4. Wild-eyed Utopian Dreamers (almost exclusively in countries where Current Bosses don’t yet have total control, these dreamers actually believe the Big Lie that socialism will create a utopia for all people)
5. Gimme Dats (in both pure socialist countries and in places like the US where socialism hasn’t yet completely triumphed, these people don’t think much about politics, only how much they can get from the system for free freely free... this group tends to become extremely disillusioned in places like the Utopian Paradise of Venezuela but cannot imagine any system other than freebees given freely to the gimme dats, so they blame the current leaders for screwing up or the evil US for throwing a monkey wrench into the system)
In the United States, young socialists in universities are (in my opinion) 70% Wannabe Bosses and 30% Wild-eyed Stupidos
Islam sees it’s enemy Western Civilization, the left is willfully blind to this.
You may have forgotten the anarchists there.
One could make a darned good case that Western Civ is the enemy of the left as well.

I've been saying for years that the Left hate conservatives/Christians more than they love America.
Because they are using muzzie atrocities to take guns away from the rest of us.
I did forget the anarchists, aka nihilists.
They are an important group and they are definitely all leftists.
Ultimately, it is from the devil and the devil hates God. Also, these leftists are cowards. It’s easy to denigrate Christians. Islamists will kill those who disagree, we won’t.

I also think this is the core impetus for the irrational scale of hatred that has made such strange bedfellows.
Constitutional Conservatism is the only thing standing in the way of totally centralized liberal power and control.
