The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings Gardeners. We have sunshine! Right here in Missouri. Started a little patio cleanup. Not too far along. Still eating endive from the garden. Spinach about gone. Have a handful of Pie Cherries from one of the Cherry Trees. Sour. Not a big harvest. Hope to get more next year.

Need to plant some more endive and spinach. Still trying to get house work chores caught up. Seem to be moving slow these days. Looking forward to Grand Daughter's wedding in about a month.

It was 49 degrees here last night. Thank goodness we had brought in our plants.

My containers have 4 kinds of lettuce, spinach, arugula, scallions, various herbs, and four tomatoe plants.

I make my daily salad with a little pair of scissors!

Yum, had BLTs with tomatoes from the garden for supper.

Something came through and ate ALL the cabbage and broccoli down to an inch of stem.

I tried to upload some pics to FR, but they were HUUUUGGGEE!!!!

Got to find a way to reduce them.

I used to use “tiny pic” but that site is unusable now due to ads and pop-ups and cookies.

75 tomato plants that are loaded with tomatoes. All colors and kinds.

25 pepper plants, mostly sweet and paprika starting to bloom heavily.

Tomatillo plants are loaded.

Winter squash, butternut variety, are starting to ripen the first batch. I’ll pick those, feed the vines, and they’ll grow and set another batch.

Growing about 10 varieties of soup/dry beans this year along with the asparagus beans (we love them stir fried), green beans and limas. Cowpeas too, 3 varieties.

Rice and tef in flats waiting to be set out this coming Monday and I plant my corn this coming Sunday or Monday (Jellicorse and Candy Mountain). Based on days to maturity the Jellicorse should tassel/silk about 2 weeks after the Candy Mountain.

Sweet potatoes I set out first week of May are running rampant. Raspberries are turning red and we’re picking a gallon or so of blueberries every day now.

Older pear trees and apple trees are loaded and we even have a couple cute peaches and plums on those trees we planted last year.

I have about 125 strawberry plants, different varieties and bearing periods, in big drink cups waiting to be set out in my front flowerbed/landscaping project sometime this month as well.

Lime and Calamondin trees have baby fruits and the banana trees I got for mothers day from Baker Creek are enormous. They were about 2” tall when I got them and now they’re nearly 3’ tall. We’ve had some hot days and I’ve got them in a warm microclimate. I also fed them the Apples and Oranges food from Urban Farms.

More stuff besides but that’s already really wordy so I’ll stop now.

We’re having pizza for supper topped with jalapenos (Goliath) I grew last year, hubby dug up, and we planted in containers that lived in the garage this winter under LED’s. Moved those out middle of April and fed them the good mojo and they’re covered with jalapenos and blooms both right now. Fresh garlic along with those jalapenos and some vidalia onions too. Mmmmm, dragon breath at my house tonight!

How depressing!

Bugs are decimating my cabbages and broccoli, so I gave up and applied a systemic pesticide. The powdery stuff wasn’t working. The systemic says it’s ok on vegetables if they are not picked for 21 days. I hope they actually did some testing on that time frame.

IF I get enough, yes. 2 years ago I set out 100 tomato plants, that were loaded, and when they started to get ripe it started to rain. And rain. And rain. And rain. They sort of melted. I got a total of SIX tomatoes off of those 100 plants.

We’ll see what we see.

I’ve got the dehydrator cleaned and waiting, just in case though. We usually dehydrate them and make tomato powder. That’s more strategic for us and doesn’t take up as much space.

I never thought about making my own tomato powder - I just buy it ;)

What do you do with your sweet peppers? I transplanted about 20 tomato plants and 20 pepper plants a week ago, and darned if they aren’t all thriving. I was hoping some of the pepper plants wouldn’t make it....I can deal with the tomatoes by canning them.

Hi, newbie to the garden threads. Does anyone do flower gardening? I am kind of new to this. It’s become a fun hobby, and now I realize that I have an addiction to flowers. I never realized it before moving to this house, where I have lots of yard and I try to fill it in with some annuals and perennials, besides the woods that take up most of the space.

I have more shade than I know what to do with. It’s getting hard to find a nice variety of flowers and plants than tolerate so much of it. I have astilbe, Solomon’s seal, many varieties of hydrangea, coral bells, and tons of different hostas. Any other suggestions?

Also looking for deer resistant plants.

Thanks for any input!

We grow several perennial flowering plants like this Campanula by the kitchen plus the Day Lilies are blooming now. Lady Bender starts and plants hundreds of annuals for various beds…

I picked almost 3 quarts of Blue Berries yesterday and Lady bender made a Blue Berry & Rhubarb pie for me. I get to eat it right out of the pie dish…

Hi Gang! I finally have the new asparagus bed in, added two root crowns to my ruhbarbs, planted four horseradish plants, two rows of carrots, 24 shallot sets, Yukon Gold and red potatoes, and six hills of Indian Winter Squash.

Our bees are almost ready for the first honey supers.

Strange, but apple fruiting is sparse this year.

Up at our RV now. Our 4 by 4 raised beds are doing well. I will add one more hill of Indian squash and some others tomorrow.

It is going to take some years to get my garden soil in proper condition, but gardening is faith in the future.
