The mother of the boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure has said that "accidents happen" on a Facebook post hitting out at critics.
The endangered animal was shot dead by zoo staff to protect the four-year-old after it began dragging him around.
Michelle Gregg has faced criticism for social media users and animal rights campaigners, who claim she should have been keeping a closer eye on her child.
Some animal lovers even suggested she should have been shot and killed instead of the gorilla Harambe.
Responding to the criticism on Facebook, she said: "I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers today. What started off as a wonderful day turned into a scary one.
"For those of you that have seen the news or been on social media that was my son that fell in the gorilla exhibit at the zoo. God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him.

A woman I saw being interviewed said the kid said several times he wanted to go into the water and the mother said No! several times. That right there should have given the mother the clue she better keep a close eye on him, because it sounds like he was determined.
The family should be billed by the zoo the price of one gorilla.
Don’t worry about what the mother said, she will blame herself for the rest of her life. That is the way it is when a child dies.
Then she shouldn’t have been at a zoo with the kid. There are some places that you don’t take a kid unless you can supervise them ALL the time. Too bad she didn’t care enough about her kid’s safety to do that because an innocent animal was the victim.
Point for that mom - bring more adults if it’s too hard to watch your kids. I see many parents expecting people around them to ‘help’.

Anyone who ever had a four old has lost track of their child at least once at the mall, open air event, parties, church etc...
Turn your head for a second and boom "where did they go"...

You don’t practice teaching a kid to listen in a dangerous place. It should’ve been done at home.
I can see the division here of responsible parents and well,... the others.
It was too clever by half, attempted infanticide by the mother. By “volunteering” a gorilla to off the boy. But the gorilla didn’t do the deed.
The gorilla took the heat, instead. He was framed. The gorilla didn’t drag the kid around to hurt him; he was frantically looking for someplace to hide the kid from the howling mob of idiots.
Mom is protesting a bit too much. How many children have we seen intionally murdered by one of their parents in the last few decades; predominantly by their mother? Just asking.
All a parent has to do is look away for a few seconds and the kid gets into something. Every parent knows this. The mother is not responsible for the death of the gorilla. The zoo did what they had to. The boy’s safety is more important than the gorilla’s life. The boy’s race is irrelevant. Stories like this bring out stupid comments from people who politicize everything.
From an interview I saw, a woman who was close by said the boy kept saying he wanted to go into the water. The mother kept telling him no! She then said the child slid under a fencing and then (my presumption is) he probably slid down the cement wall of the water canal.
It is irresponsible because more adults should’ve been there if the mom was so overwhelmed she let a 4 year old wander off. Good parents know their kids and know what situations present the time for more watching. This mom was obviously not one of those. Even now, she is only making excuses.
The UK is animal rights crazy.
400 lbs. of brute power vs. a 4 yr. old? God’s grace was with the boy. In the next case He might withhold it. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

You’ll probably get flamed for your statement but it’s hard to know. When my daughter was about 2 we were visiting an aunt and uncle’s house. After about 2 minutes we missed our daughter and she had climbed up on top of the motorhome! I got her down OK, but, like you say, it’s virtually impossible to keep perfect watch.
In a potentially dangerous place with a kid that made it clear he wouldn’t listen to her - she should’ve paid more attention. This was a different situation than the benign ones you compare into.
There are more bad parents out there these days. Goes hand in hand with entitlements and the dumbing down of society.
I can’t speak to the specifics of what happened at the zoo.
I can say with experience that no matter how closely I watched my children in a public setting, each of my three sons “got away” at least once. All it takes is a split second, for whatever reason.

The kid disobeyed the mother. The gorilla was confused by the strange simian in its environment. It did not immediately rend the kid limb from limb, but appeared to protect it. This is a colossal shame and disgrace. A beautiful and endangered creature minding its own business killed because of a careless mother and frankly stupid kid.
Flame away, I could not give a hang.
LOL. I have no doubt the little man is going to be hearing that for a very long time. I also suspect he's going to have trouble sitting for awhile if his parents are like most of the black parents I'm acquainted with. As Bill Cosby used to say: "The beatings will commence!"

My first daughter was like that. We took care of it very soon. Back then they had what was called a child's leash. It was great. Now you would more than likely be accused of child abuse if you used one.
LOL. I just can’t get excited about this dead gorilla despite the mental breakdowns on Facebook.
