(Cincinnati) Zoo: Gorilla killed after dragging boy who fell into exhibit; child hospitalized

CINCINNATI – A gorilla was killed after it dragged a 3-year-old boy that fell into its enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden Saturday, Zoo Director Thane Maynard said.

The boy was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Police and EMTs were called to the zoo at about 4 p.m. for reports that a gorilla was "slamming the child into the wall."

Maynard said the boy crawled through a barrier and landed in the moat. He was walking and splashing. Harambe, a 17-year-old male gorilla weighing more than 400 pounds, picked up the boy, Maynard said. Witnesses said the gorilla grabbed and dragged the screaming boy around the habitat for about 10 minutes.

Personnel from the zoo's dangerous animal response team decided to put down Harambe rather than tranquilize him because the boy was in danger and the tranquilizer would not have taken effect immediately, Maynard said. Two other gorillas in the exhibit were called back inside.

Maynard called it "a life-threatening situation" for the boy. The response team shot Harambe.

Nothing tops the idiots who put a baby bison in their minivan in Yellowstone.

Shame they didn’t mention the name of the ones that did that. I would like to see what survivors of complete lobotomies look like.

It makes one wonder what the real purpose of a “zoo” is.

Many are like prisons for animals.

I would prefer that their be a more limited number of regional zoos. Maybe 6 - 10 total in the nation. And make each of these zoos great exhibits.

And try to keep mostly animals that are healthy but aren’t suitable to go back into the wild. In the USA, there are over 2,000 “animal exhibitors.” Probably 200+ zoos. Worldwide, there are over 10,000.

There are just too many zoos. With that many, you know you would have a lot of clowns keeping animals that shouldn’t be.

I predict this kid will never be able to watch “King Kong.”

Sounds like the boy lives in a life-threatening situation with his noncaring parents.

Our family regularly went to the zoo in NY when I young. Once while we were in the cat house during feeding time I decide I wanted an orange drink, so I just turned around and took off walking. Suddenly my parents realized I was not next to them with all the big cats roaring. It took a few moments for them to see me walking towards the concession stand outside a fair distance away.
My parents were not neglectful, so please hold back criticism when you were not there.

Sometimes when the lions wake up if the wind is right I can hear them roaring. It is an amazing sound God created...hair stands up on one’s neck. I digress...I Live like a mile from the zoo...I was at home at 4pm but my whole house fan is running so I didn’t hear the gunshot. Unbelievable that a parent wasn’t watching their kid. Unfortunate and fortunate simultaneously. I would bet either a .306 rifle or .50 cal handgun used. Either one would do it. We here in Cincy seem to make the news for all the wrong reasons. It’s a great place to raise a family even those I’m like the only conservative on my street save my like-minded wife.(And teens)

"...one with a substantial power pack."

Just put outlets next to all the exhibits and use one that takes 120/60.

“Witnesses said the gorilla grabbed and dragged the screaming boy around the habitat for about 10 minutes.”

It took 10 minutes to respond the zoo’s SWAT team and take care of business. That’s about 7 minutes too long.

It says something that I trust a dog more than my closer relative, the chimp.

Me, too. Indeed, given a choice between keeping a chimp or a boa, I’d absolutely keep the boa.

Why are people still going to zoos for Christs sake?

Last time I went I stared down a Red Rhino, son of a bitch got so pissed it charged, lucky there was a giant moat that prevented it from killing a bunch of people.

Stop with the wild animals already, put humans in instead, now THAT would be entertaining.

I swear these places exist just so the weirdos that go to college to get a degree in zoology have a place to work.

Zoological gardens are like the other kind of garden except with animals instead of plants.

Hopefully they are managed well.

Don’t forget the bison calf that was put down because the herd rejected it after tourists put it in their car because they thought it was cold.

It might have been shunned by the herd prior to then, so the trip in the car would not have changed its fate to the worse.
