If you get tired of French dips at Philippe’s, head for ABC Seafood across the street for some great Southern Chinese cuisine—or walk a couple blocks to the Won Kok, another great Cantonese eatery. Both offer reasonable prices.

There used to be a lot of Frenchmen and Italians living in what is now Chinatown. Philippes is one of the last remnants of the French community. On the other side of Chinatown across the Pasadena Freeway, one can get huge meatball and Italian sausage sandwiches at the
Eastside Market, a family-owned eatery that is one of the last remnants of the Italian community
