Yes it is a good and low cost French Dip.
Title only makes good tacos, forget the other stuff.
Both are probably struggling. Everything is in trouble in CA except for the welfare offices.

Just out of curiosity, did you per chance ever manage to get to the Magic Restroom Café before it got flushed?
Haven't been to LA in a quite a while, and only saw some photos of its non-starter theme. Perhaps a pop-up during a kitchen & bath convention?
To: nickcarraway
No, you have to go in. I like looking at the tables that used to be “higher than my head” when Daddy brought me in as a child. I like remembering the spanking I gave my firstborn (age 5) in one of the wooden bathroom stalls, when I brought him on a date and he was acting up. Memories. The coffee was 5c for years.

I remember going into Philippe’s back in 1962 or so with my Dad, an LA Times photographer. At that time Philippe’s was a hangout for all the Los Angeles newspapermen and LA cops. You sometimes ran into a Dodgers baseball player like Don Drysdale there too. Philippe invented French dip sandwiches.
To: bboop
Phillipe’s is my family’s favorite restaurant. The tradition was started by my wife’s family when she was a little girl. If anyone new decides to try this place be sure to ask for your sandwich to be double dipped (extra juice). Go for a piece of pie for dessert.

Tables inside, yes.
Very inexpensive but good.

If I remember correctly (is there an abbreviation for that?);
there is a major intersection atop what was the French cemetery, and Olvera Street (Hispanic icon) was originally Italian, then made Mexican by city fiat based on one house and one freaking tree.

The coffee was 5c for years.That's how and where I learned that a down and out soul could survive on nickel coffee, most of a sugar shaker, and free peanuts.
