Scratch Israel for my next camping experience. I’ll stick to my hotel and a day trip to Masada!

While we were camping near Oolagah, Oklahoma, a huge centipede came crawling through the camp. I sprayed it with Raid and killed it.

I measured it and it was just about exactly a foot long. I later looked it up and that is about as large as they ever get.

We once had 200 stink bugs fly into our camper......no kidding!
Shenandoah Valley

They don’t really stink, but they’re big and they fly.

We have solifugids here in Colorado and I'll occasionally see one in the house. They're tiny compared to the ones in the Middle East—about the size of an elongated Wolf Spider, which they somewhat resemble from a distance. Up close, all the details are wrong for a spider. Most people here have never heard of them; but they're fairly common.

Despite their ferocious appearance, they are actually lower on the pecking order than common house spiders; and I have seen spiders dining on them on a couple of occasions.

We had some of those crawl out of the organ during Mass in San Antonio. They’d probably lived there since the organ was moved to Texas in the 1930s. Father Henke, the cowboy priest, stomped one with his cowboy boots, and some intrepid gents hustled the others out the back door.

That’s a very handsome arachnid. My children all want one, but we are not in their appropriate climate.

There's a lot to be said for winter camping.

Just make sure to shake out your boots before you put them on in the morning.

Same thing in Arizona.

Not a spider...
But it can grow to 6” long
deliver a painful bite
run at a speed of 10mph
and it’s an arachnid.

No, not a spider. More like a superspider.
