My son has an opportunity to intern for a Republican congressman for a month or so this summer. Outside of the Universities, what other options are there for temporary (1-2 months) living quarters near the subway? Any and all insight is appreciated. Thank you.
Craig’s list. You’ll find something.
We found a double dorm room at American University for my son and one for my daughter at George Washington U. Seemed the safest as they did have campus security as well as DC police around.
FYI: Capital hill is a cesspool. The farther west and north you live in the DC area the safer you are.
I was just gonna say this. These areas are VERY dangerous areas.
I won’t go there in the daytime.
My thought is to contact other interns. I like the arlington VA area but there is a network of interns — start with your representative in congress.
I went to a KFC on S. Capitol St and it had 1 inch bullet proof glass in front of the counter.
He’s done that unfortunately, it’s late in the game for him. He has most of the internship websites, but most are already booked. Thank you.
The office suggested that too but I’m not comfortable that. What has been your experience using Craigslist?
there should be pro active help at his office he is going to. There are interns leaving and trying to fulfill leases. Where there is a will there is a way. Just be safe.
Checking with George Washington University is a possibility.
Part of your search is going to be governed by the short notice and your/his budget. There are networks of corporate short-term housing in and near DC, but that is probably not what you had in mind for an intern assignment. If you have more details on type of quarters and price range, it might help in a response.
Imagine if they hated the product!
Since you don’t know the area it will be tough. You can’t check out the “roommates wanted” locally. It is a tough situation. You may have to go Extended Stay.
I would discourage any relative of mine. The whole Congress stinks to the high heavens, AFAIC.
Though you have to do what you feel is right.
Good point, he would be in D.C. May 29th and returning July 8th. Looking in the $2,000 range.
Ask the congressman if he can bunk in the office, shower at the gym. If the speaker of the House can do it, why can’t an intern?
BTW congrats to your son!
I tell you whenever I walk into an establishment, I always get a warm fuzzy feeling whenever there is bullet proof glass everywhere. IT is very welcoming and comforting.
A young relative commutes from Richmond Va suburb to DC to work.
