We get it: Cruises can be expensive, and often the food and drink at ports of call can be pricier than what you pay back home. But that doesnt mean you have to bogart the free coffee and donuts at the homeless shelter near the dock.
For many cruise ships making the trip up the Pacific coastline to Alaska, the small city of Ketchikan is the first stop heading north, allowing travelers to get off the ship for a bit, walk around and do a bit of shopping before moving on to the next port.
Earlier this week, at a meeting of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly, the operator of First City Homeless Services, a downtown day shelter in the city, revealed that not all of the people who visit the shelter are homeless, especially during the cruise season between May and September.

That’s pretty pathetic since you can grub down unlimited amounts on board prior to heading out.
Maybe some people thought it was just more free sh** provided by the cruise line or US Federal Gov’t?
“Thats pretty pathetic since you can grub down unlimited amounts on board prior to heading out.”
You just described how a sense of entitlement gets started....
But they did pay for it, with their taxes. But I still think they are wrong as can be.
I hear ya.. They serve breakfast early and often (or used to) and there is always food to be had, not sure why some would feel it necessary to eat much of anything ashore most of the time.
I agree with you.
More than likely you are correct. I’d say that’s what is happening. It wouldn’t hurt the cruise lines one bit to chip in a little for coffee, and doughnuts at the shelter. Not that big a deal. Do it anonymously so they aren’t hit up by every liberal wanna piece of the action there is around town.
I was living in Florence and stopped to see a friend at a hotel. There was a bus for American students waiting out front. By the front desk, there was a table with their breakfast : coffee, juice and a pastry.
Instead, they stormed the continental breakfast for the hotel guests with these meteosexual students whining that they were hungry.
I was mortified and ashamed and did not identify myself as American.
Why do I suspect it’s Chinese & Chinese-American tourists doing this? I just can’t imagine West Coast liberals raiding a homeless shelter for free stuff...but the Chinese? Oh, yeah.
Many of the cruising clientele on these Alaska cruises are the liberal tree huggers, love a glacier types and they are always looking for a free hand out even though most are 1% ers.
You must not cruse alaska very often
“Why do I suspect its Chinese & Chinese-American tourists doing this? “
Really?
You just insulted my wonderful daughter-in-law of over 20 years.
The season opened this week, and one of the hidden items that happens as a result of the proximity of the day shelter to downtown and the cruise ships is we do often get the husband who doesnt want to go shopping anymore to come to the shelter to sit seriously to drink our free our free coffee, use our free bathrooms, and eat our free donuts,
OK, I can see going in to use the bathroom, maybe sit down. But eating the food? C’mon. Cruises are food orgies. Still, I think the shelter could make this a positive. Put up donation jars and start asking people who are obviously tourists to donate. And hit up the cruise lines for donations. I bet they would give them money and food for the publicity.
This article makes little sense. What kind of cruise passenger would even want to visit some dirty homeless shelter to have some of their stale doughnuts and coffee anyhow?
I went on an Alaska cruise a few years ago and the Chinese (not sure if they were Chinese nationals or Chinese-Americans) would consistently cut in line, they mobbed the buffet, they’d rudely bump into me as if they didn’t see me, they would SPIT on the carpet INSIDE the ship, they smoked inside the ship and when they were told not to do it they lit up as soon as the crew members walked away from them, and then when the trip was over they mobbed all over the luggage pick up area and knocked over other people’s bags in order to get to their own.
Maybe you might want to run this by your daughter-in-law before you get too mad at me. One of my online Chinese friends says these people are ‘peasants’ who do this kind of thing but that it’s not unusual. He also says that China has had classes for their people who go to other countries to teach them about foreign customs.
It’s a problem and being mad at me for believing what I see when I see it does not change the fact of what I’ve seen.
If the bus was waiting out front, wasn’t it likely those students were staying at the hotel? How do you know they weren’t guests? Just wondering.
Get a grip! Noone was talking about your lovely DIL! GEESH!!! EVERYONE IS OFFENDED THESE DAYS....even MEN that shoul shrug stuff off.
The shelter relies on donations and funding from the city and its borough, and it’s requesting more money from officials.
