I was a pastor in Northern California. My wife, me and the kids lived in the parsonage on the church site. One night a man came to my door looking for 'help'. I went out on the porch, did not let him in. I gave him some food, even some clothes. But then he said he wanted/needed money. I said, I don't give out money. Then he acted upset and told me how he had just gotten out of jail for manslaughter. I went inside and told my wife to call the police. I waited and waited and still no police. THANKFULLY the man moved on. The police finally did come. But it suddenly dawned on me. We could all be dead. I had never had a gun in the house. My wife was against it. But I went to the gun store and got a shotgun. Now we have a shotgun and a glock 23. I'm once again getting trained up like my military years. In any case, i am thankful that we survived that big aha so we could arm and defend ourselves-- a day which I pray never comes. And even better--now we live in Texas where I just applied for my License to carry (not to open carry)
An armed society is a polite society.
My wife and I practice often. Her 96 year old father still has his farm and we go there to shoot very often. She is a good shot at twenty yards she could put your eye out, you shouldn't mess with her. She carries in her purse, her purse has a special place for a gun, its cool.
I always recommend to people to get a gun that they will carry. If you have to stop someone a great big 45 will do the job nicely but the only problem is that you won't have it with you because you will think it is too big.
38’s & 9mm’s both come in small enough and light enough sizes that they can be easily carried. Yes a 32 is small too but I think that is just too small a caliper to stop someone with. A 38 or a 9mm hollow point will slow anyone down with only one shot and the noise will startle most anyone.
Get a gun, train on it often and carry always.

Agreed. As adorable as the S&W 500 is, it falls a bit short in concealability and in the risk of overpenetration. My primary home defense is a Remington 870 with buckshot, or a Glock with appropriate home defense 9mm rounds. I don't carry (People's Republic of Maryland), but even in the home something too big can be an issue. The 1911 .45 ACP with defensive rounds (I like the label in case I have to explain my ammo choice in court) is an option, but it's not my "go to" choice. The 1911 (or the AR) is where I would go rather than reloading the Glock/Remington.
There is actually an evolutionary theory that many women are subconsciously programmed to demand things that will get their men killed.
It is a unconscious way of making sure they are with the fittest man possible. If the man follows her lethal advice, he was not as fit as a man who would ignore her. So when she gets him killed with bad advice, she can then seek out a man who will ignore her, and whose children will be more likely to keep her genes flowing through the family tree.
Interestingly it is also believed (with good anecdotal evidence IMHO) that such women tend to become more attracted to men who just blow them off and happily do their own thing, regardless of any bitching and moaning.

There are some folks who don't want a gun available to them because they are simply inexperienced. Gun classes, range time, etc. can help overcome that.
But there are also some folks who don't want a gun available to them because of moral reasons. Those folks may well hesitate in critical moments. A study of WW II combat vets showed that there are more of this second type than you'd think.
My strong advice: Get your wife some high-quality, police-grade pepper spray. Fox is a good brand, and it's available on Amazon. Is it as effective as gun? Of course not. But it fills in the gap between having no weapon and having a gun.
I am not about to argue that. I agree. Sometimes my thinking needs adjusting.
A gun is like insurance. You should always have it and hope you never need to use it.
If you can’t defend it, you don’t own it.
This applies to your wallet, car, home, body.
If you need to hand over the keys to a criminal, you do not own that.
