Why I armed myself

Posted on 05/05/2016 4:15:48 AM PDT by uscga77

I was a pastor in Northern California. My wife, me and the kids lived in the parsonage on the church site. One night a man came to my door looking for 'help'. I went out on the porch, did not let him in. I gave him some food, even some clothes. But then he said he wanted/needed money. I said, I don't give out money. Then he acted upset and told me how he had just gotten out of jail for manslaughter. I went inside and told my wife to call the police. I waited and waited and still no police. THANKFULLY the man moved on. The police finally did come. But it suddenly dawned on me. We could all be dead. I had never had a gun in the house. My wife was against it. But I went to the gun store and got a shotgun. Now we have a shotgun and a glock 23. I'm once again getting trained up like my military years. In any case, i am thankful that we survived that big aha so we could arm and defend ourselves-- a day which I pray never comes. And even better--now we live in Texas where I just applied for my License to carry (not to open carry)

Your tale is like many others where that “a ha!” comes as a moment of sobering clarity. Having had to use a firearm to defend my life not once, but twice, I thank God every day that I live in this great nation. Had I not been armed, I would’ve died one of those days back in 2002.

Your training will come back to you, and you’ll always be prepared. There’s a price to be paid for that eternal vigilance, but it’s the price we all pay for freedom. It’s well worth the investment.

“... my wife was against it”.

Please consider taking your wife with you at the range. My point being this: you aren’t always at home. She should be able to properly use the firearm as well. She may never “like it” but she should know HOW to use it if the situation arises. Not sure the age of your children but teens should know how to use it as well. Just my honest opinion... I’m considering two wise recommendations from your post.

1) Buy a gun.
2) Move back to Texas.

The verse squishy Christians would prefer to forget. We are to be His sheep. But especially when the Shepherd’s not with us we need to know how and be willing to use our teeth. The wolves want an easy meal and could not care less about a Shepherd they can’t see and don’t believe in.

I’ve been in almost that situation. The difference is I was armed, while the similarity was the police took forever.

I had multiple unknown teens attempt to enter my home at night, without permission, behaving in a manner that was a major concern. The police were polite and helpful . . . and extremely slow. I didn’t like the idea of multiple intruders, but at least I was armed. Glock and Remington together make all the difference!

"...now we live in Texas where I just applied for my License to carry (not to open carry)..."

Great news: A permit to carry concealed in TX is now also a permit to open carry!

The supermarket HEB says no guns. Kroger says yes guns.

We no longer go to HEB. We DO go to Kroger.

In 1983 my wife decided that having guns in the house was a bad thing. She wasn’t happy until I locked them in a large cabinet in my garage. A week later, she went to visit friends in California. The first night she was away, someone thought our house was vacant and broke in. I wrestled with the intruder and wound up with a large hunting knife embedded in my shoulder.
The burglar ran off and I called the cops. They didn’t catch him, but I remember the Chief of Police asking me if I owned a gun. When I said, “Yes.”, he then asked me, “Why didn’t you use it?”
In the days following this event, my firearms came back into the house and I’ve never since investigated a noise at night without my 12 Gauge.

I live in a very rural area in NC. On the rarest of rarest occasions will someone come to my door, and I’m talking in the daytime.

If I were to hear a knock on my door in the evening, it’s sop for me to go into a level orange mode. Specific alert to probable danger. Ready to take action.

For me it’s better to be prepared and it just be someone who is totally lost, than to be complacent and it be someone who wants to do me harm.

Thank the Living God you survived that event. I certainly hope your beloved bride took that as a clarion call to become vigilant.

I took my wife to a pistol range many years ago to introduce her to firearms. She had never fired one before so I went through an abbreviated course of fire for her. Her 1st round was dead-center in the 10 ring at 15 yards. She has been an expert shot ever since and has supported me taking our kids to the range. All are trained and understand the purpose of firearms in our home. I continue to encourage their successive training and expose them to the realities of those who both maintain arms and those who do not.

Keep your powder dry!

The possibility of multiple intruders (eg. the teen pack) is why I keep my AR and several 30 round mags by the bed. I always have a handgun within arms reach, the AR represents more stopping power.

In terms of crime my immediate neighborhood has gone down hill significantly in the last 18 months or so. Apparently one or more families moved in a street or two away and it is either their kids or their kids' friends who are causing problems. Cars broken into, garages broken into and thefts occurring. Vandalism. I'm considering trying to apply a little deterrence - maybe get a retention holster and start open carrying and walk my dog down their way. Let them know they are playing a dangerous game of chance. I know several of my immediate neighbors are firearms enthusiasts and 2nd Amendment supporters. It is only a matter of time before one of these punks gets in way over their head.

Our Preacher is armed and advises all other members to arm themselves. Jesus Himself said, If one does not have a sword, which today would be at least a pistol, let him sell his cloak and buy one.

Clarion (instrument)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clarion is a common name for a trumpet in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It also is used as a name for a 4’ organ reed stop.[1] There is wide confusion over whether clarion invariably refers to a type of trumpet or simply the upper register of the standard trumpet.

I have used a gun twice, once in self defense and once to clear the parking lot at my church of drug dealers. I never had to pull a trigger.

Let them know they are playing a dangerous game of chance . . . It is only a matter of time before one of these punks gets in way over their head.

People who play adult games need to understand the risk before they get unlucky. I would rather have them learn than see them killed, but I would rather see them killed than see an innocent person victimized, even in a "property crime". Having someone break in is a life-changing event for a victim who feels helpless and have nightmares for years or even forever.

I've had no bad dreams at all, just a few unpleasant conversations with my wife. She doesn't want me to hurt a kid, but she does want me to shoot anyone who breaks in and poses a threat.
