What has happened to the Free Republic that I can’t break away from? You know the one where you knew something big was happening in the world because you couldn’t open the site because of too much traffic (late 90’s)? The one that where you read articles that were of great interest on science, religion, or the bizarro? The one where you would have to don a flame retardant suit if you posted something that was outside the thought prevailing thought process of the other posters? I long for those days as I am sure many of us do as well as those that left. I don’t particularly care for the bulk of the political posting but, like watching television, have decided not to open them up rather than throw in the towel and leave the site. Yet I’m still here waiting for those days to return, checking in every 15 minutes for earth shaking news. These days will pass albeit slower than I like and so too will this election cycle. Interesting times are ahead…

No system of free-willed people and freely spoken people will sustain such a period of consistency.
Like the waves on the ocean, things wax, things wane.
I don’t know about everyone, but I’ve felt this same teeth-grinding anger and unwillingness to compromise and agree since 92. I think we are just getting far more comfortable with the internet that we are different people now not in the way that we feel or act - but in the way we convey ourselves to others.
Just bring up vaccinations or not belonging to the Trump cult and you’ll get lots of flaming.
one reason is that the MSM now prints several articles on the same subject and most of them are the reporters all chewing on the same piece of gristle in slightly different ways. They forgot the new part of news.
Fox News used to be the standard bearer for different and better news but they’ve fallen in the party line. Blogs were good at first but are now just a bunch of Java junkyards like the rest of the web is now. To me, over the years, more and more websites are becoming not even worth the time or a click.
And if one has a mangina, such as this person, where does one go?
