A letter of thanks to Apple, from a grateful dad

Earlier this evening I got a call from my son, I could hear voices in the background so I just thought he had butt dialed me. I called back, planning to ask my son what his butt wanted. No answer. Strange.

A few minutes later he called again. He couldn’t hear me, but I could hear him. He said “I’m not sure if you can hear me, but I’m at Kennestone Hospital ER”. He repeated that several times and eventually the call ended. I called the ER and eventually found out he was in a car accident, but he was OK, getting stitches. Of course me and the wife got our stuff and headed to the hospital. He sounded OK on the phone, so I knew it wasn’t TOO bad.

We got to the hospital to find him with 10+ stitches in his face. He looked pretty bad, but was OK. Then he gave us the rest of the story. His phone was smashed. The screen wasn’t even attached to the iPhone.

'

It still worked.

Somewhat.

When he was at the hospital, he couldn’t remember my phone number, or anyones number really. He was trying to figure how how to contact someone… anyone.

He grabbed the phone with no screen, then he pressed the home button. He felt it try to vibrate and just said “Call Dad”. After what seemed like minutes, he heard “Calling Dad”. Siri never sounded so good. That is the call I got where I could hear him. Siri worked. The iPhone microphone worked. Amazing.

Thank you Apple for an amazing product that every once in a while surprises you and enriches our life. From a dad, I’m very thankful that phone still worked to make its last call to me. Thanks to all my friends who work at Apple as well. Your hard work is appreciated.

Did Siri sound like she had a splitting headache?

Cool story! Sometimes tech helps by being ever present, sometimes it will hurt.

Smashed iPhone still worked sufficiently for Siri to initiate an emergency phone call home from the Emergency Room after an automobile accident. The iPhone did not even have a screen attached, but it still worked enough to allow a son to call his father to let him know where he was. — PING!

I’m glad the phone still allowed contact, but I was more interested in how the boy’s accident happened and if anyone else was injured. If Apple didn’t mind being savaged on Twitter for tastelessness, they could make a good commerical using this story. Names and dates changed to protect privacy.

Our mobile devices are wonderful for many things, but the cripple us when they fail. This kid could not remember ANY phone numbers to be able to call home in an emergency because he relied so much on his memory crutch of his mobile device to remember them for him. That is something we should ALL learn from this tale. The Moral of this story is DON’T rely on your iPhone or other mobile phone to remember your Emergency Contact Information. . . It just may not be there when you most need it! That phone may be smashed, lost, burned or otherwise just not available to make that call for you.

Stitches in the face typically means not wearing a seatbelt. My guess is his knee is what crushed the phone.

From the damage to the phone I would guess the accident victim was texting or talking on the phone when the accident occurred.

Now there is Apple’s potentially best commercial in a long time.

Use the real folks in the commercial too.

I love it when people talk about Apple products and how hifalutin they are, but there’s an Apple Store and a Microsoft store in the mall near me. Guess which one is almost always empty?

My first thought was that the kid was texting. . . but on second thought I realized it would be unlikely that if he had been, he would have been able to retain the iPhone in hand after an accident that damaged his face to the extent he needed ten stitches. That implies the accident involved a lot of force and the phone would have gone flying around the car. Most likely he was not wearing a seat belt to get such a facial injury with modern car design. Looking at the phone damage, it looks as if he may have been ejected from the car. . . With the phone. Locating a free flying phone would have been the last thing on his mind in the accident aftermath, especially locating a detached shattered screen. Keeping the detached screen with the iPhone means it was likely in his pocket.

I agree about the advertisement. . . It would show the robust construction of the iPhone and the utility of Siri.

I suppose if the kid was texting or talking while driving, maybe not use the people, just focus on the phone working with this much damage.

Too bad many cant survive a fall into toilet water or a sink.

I’m guilty of not knowing phones numbers any more. I know a few but not many. My cell has me depending on it too much. I’m going to get a small phone note book as I use to have years ago. Do they still make them?
