The meeting did occur, but it was a “Hey, just wanted to make sure you absolutely knew this wasn’t your fault and you have no guilt” thing, not a “Because we are you leaders we have the power to declare you clean” thing. I can’t find any news stories about it though but I am pretty sure it happened

Most Mormons I know don't act like that or support acting like that, and you didn't hear Mormon elders or whatever clamoring to his defense and pointing to their laws. Did you? I didn't.
Interesting counter-example: If he were a Moslem, we couldn't say any of that. Lots of Moslems live all middle class and suddenly act that way in the name of jihad. Surveys of their populations in the West keep showing 20 percent or more admitting openly that they support it--and pointing to the Koran to justify it.

14 year olds are charged as adults for crimes quite often in many states, they were even executed for capital crimes within living memory.
