Eagles eating cat upsets nest viewers
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | 4/29/16 | John Hayes

It was inevitable, from the moment video cameras went up over Pittsburgh area bald eagle nests, that viewers would eventually see something disturbing.

On Tuesday, eagles at the nest site in the Hays neighborhood brought a young cat into the nest to feed their two eaglets.

"After reviewing the footage, we believe the cat was dead when it was brought to the nest," said Rachel Handel, spokeswoman for the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania. "We don't know if it was a pet or feral. It's impossible to know if the cat was killed by the eagle or was a roadkill, but eagles are opportunists and just as apt to take something that's already dead as something that's alive to feed their young."

On regional eagle chat boards, some were squeamish or disturbed that the scene was live-streamed on a popular viewing site. Others speculated about the meal's identity until Handel turned the event into a learning moment.

No, we did not choose a vegetarian bird to be our national symbol.

Only a cat? That's an appetizer.

Nature is violent. Always has been, always will be. Those that are offended by a display of Mother Nature’s character cannot truly behold her grandeur.

Nature doesn’t have or respect “safe spaces”.

Hey, its survival. Being PC is a luxury. I wish more Americans understood this so that they wouldn’t take for granted the “luxuries” that we have which includes plentiful food, shelter,... general comfort well beyond what most people around the world have.

The Bald Eagle is a symbol of the US.

These Bald Eagles murdered a poor defenseless kitty
just like the US does to people throughout the world.

Kitties need safe zones.

Liberal logic coming in 3...2...1...

Yeah, like Orcas eating another "fellow whale" after toying with it for a while.

Yippee the Chihuahua up the road.....

A few years ago a Peregrine Falcon grabbed a Yorkie out of a back yard not far from me.

It happens. The Chihuahua is on the lunch menu as well.

Up in AK, folks string wire across their backyards to deter eagles from swooping in and grabbing their pet lap dog.

My parents have a cabin in Northern Michigan. Word was that a golden eagle was picking up pets. My mom’s really furry persian cat, Tinker, was sitting in a rocker on the deck when the golden eagle flew in and landed on the head of the rocker. It looked down at Tinker and wondered whether she could pick that huge-looking furry cat and decided Tinker was going to be too heavy to carry off to her nest. So she flew off leaving Tinker to complete her time in the sun.

I wonder how many birds that cat had killed and eaten before karma caught up with him.
