All else being equal (genetics, etc.), intelligence and education will account for most of the longevity differential, since longevity is primarily a function of lifestyle knowledge and discipline, namely proper exercise, healthy diet choices, alcohol abstinence or moderation, and abstinence from illicit drugs, abstinence of other risky behaviors, and accommodation of genetic predisposition or actual occurrence of disease that requires regular medication and further alteration of lifestyle.

Could it bee the poor are influenced by bad decisions like addiction and homelessness?

Take a look at the obesity rates.

We grew up in a ‘well-to-do’ business family. That would’ve been considered ‘garish and tacky’ in our day. Things have certainly changed.

No kidding. Somebody did a survey on prom costs a few years ago and discovered that poor people spend more on their kids’ proms than middle class folks. Ya don’t say.

Best way to get photo proof of at least the first baby daddy...

You have nailed it, Sir...

After 38 years of scooping up druggies and winos off the streets of Denver, I can testify none of them were members of The Cherry Creek Country Club, let alone more than the price of a pint of Mad Dog in pocket...

Homelessness, alcohol and/or drug abuse, mental deficiencies of one sort or another, and risky life behaviors kill ‘em relatively young and skew the stats...

Cause or effect. Being sick is expensive.

Re the study: No shit Sherlock. How much did this obvious conclusion cost the taxpayers and the parents of MIT students?

Nobody tells one they have to smoke, drink, gamble, fight, become criminals, etc. esp. with all the social services (legitimate ones) and the freebies (EBT abuse, welfare fraud, tax fraud, etc).

There are many poor who are honest, hardworking, decent people who don’t do any or all of the above. They usually are church-goers, have a tight family structure (mother and father), work several jobs, emphasize education, good manners and good citizenship.

These are the “forgotten poor” because Marxists don’t like their “lifestyle” of hard work and personal responsibility.

Bush’s fault. Although last time I checked, the mortality rate was 100% for everyone.

When you piss away your formative educational years on worthless crap instead of studying, you don’t get to blame others for doing better than you.

It isn’t privilege. It is about educating yourself to be able to have a decent career.

The fact that millions of Americans have made better lives for themselves and left poverty conditions for generations, is proof its about giving a sh1t about yourself to invest time and studying in yourself. To become a better person.

And no, rap and basketball and lesbian studies is not that.

So if we give da poor folk enough free money to make them rich, they’ll live longer? I’m going to need some time to think this over. In the meantime, “Just Say NO To Drugs.”

It’s those Cadillac health insurance policies. Tax’em some more and those health gaps will narrow.

Why...it’s nothing but “healthcare privilege”.

I'm going to be a Debbie Downer with this.

I teach in an urban high school. The trick is “not knowing” who is the baby daddy. That way baby mama can get more money and subsidies and baby daddy doesn't have to get a job. He can still sell drugs and float baby mama money for her nails and hair.

It gets worse. Baby mamas have figured out that nursing makes them money. They nurse or pump (pump is paid for through Medicaid) and then tell WIC it's not working out. They continue feeding baby breast milk while collecting money for formula, which is expensive. They then eBay the formula for profit.

This is where it really gets bad. Even those who don't work and pay no taxes get the child tax credit. Baby mamas know that because they are in the poverty level, fed gov will not prosecute them for tax issues. It would cost more than fed gov will get back. So baby mamas, whose children have their last names and not their fathers’ last names, trade SS numbers with their sisters. They get more money back than they have children.

And then there are the new geographic patterns in the findings. For instance: Eight of the 10 states with the lowest life expectancies for people in the bottom income quartile form a contiguous belt, curving around from Michigan through Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

I was thinking of the Dean of the college talking to Dr. Venkman in Ghostbusters...

Doctor... Stepner. The purpose of science is to serve mankind. You seem to regard science as some kind of dodge... or hustle. Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist, Dr. Stepner!
