Apple made many of the Star Trek inventions real.

Cant wait for replicators, warp drive and transporters.

3D printers are getting closer to replicators every day. There is some seriously interesting work on warp drive these days. For real. Might take another century or dozen to get there, though. Transporters probably won’t ever happen.

I took some compuer classes in junior high in the early 80’s. We had our choice of apple II’s, Commodore VIC 20’s, and IBM XT/AT computers. The things that you could do with less than 32k of memory.

From the Apple ][ through the iPod, (except for Lisa) I still have at least one working example of all those listed -- and many more.

When I retired, I retired my cell phone, wristwatch and Daytimer -- so I don't need or own their Apple equivalents.

In our work of mapping the pioneer/Spanish/Indian roads & trails of Texas, my colleagues (fellow "Rut Nuts") and I use Google Earth as our geodatabase and KML as our data exchange format. If Google ever "un-crippled" its mobile app by giving it full KML power, we'd probably all go into the field with GPS-enabled iPads...

I do own Windows machines for running GIS & graphics systems no longer supported for the Mac, but, frankly don't know where they are right now...

~~~~~~~~~~
For 40 years, Apple has managed to meet, or exceed -- or anticipate -- my needs. And all my Apple equipment -- oldest to newest -- still works.
I suppose you could say I'm a well-satisfied 40-year customer...
I don’t see it that way.
So, if the government (say, the IRS) wanted access to your personal data, you would be completely and unabashedly on board with providing the government the keys to get it?
Are you in favor of allowing unfettered government access to personal information would be okay in the case of jihadis, drug runners, and kiddie porn aficionados?
What reasonable person would disagree with that?
How about murderers and rapists too? I think that would be okay. How about thieves?
I suppose in all of these cases, this would only be unfettered access for people who have been convicted, right? Because, after all, no reasonable person would want to allow unlimited government access to personal data for people who are only suspected of such things, right?
Wow. I guess I am a Mac nerd. I had an Apple II, IIc, And I own an iPod, IPhone, iPad, and a MacBook Pro.
I had to sit down with a Windows computer the other day and I was like trying to talk in a different language.
Use both, and try to keep practiced on both. Never know when there might l be a VHS/Betmax moment in the PC future.
I have been using Macs since my SE in 1987, but I work in IT, so I get to use em all. There are things that Windows does that I like, and things that UNIX does that I appreciate, but if I have a choice, I’ll use a Mac. Doesn’t mean Iike everything Apple does either. I am pretty pissed off with what they have done with the UI for iTunes and iPhoto, but nobody bats a thousand in the computer industry.
But I do appreciate Apple’s stance towards customer data. It seems to be unpopular with people who might be otherwise conservative, but have a hair across their ass for all things Apple, and they are, in many cases (but not all) siding with tyranny on the issue of privacy.
You cannot be a little bit pregnant.
Either you are okay with the sacredness of your private papers and possessions, or you are not.
No government should force a person to break into someone else’s private information. Sure the government owned the phone and they were within their rights to break the code themselves.
Just as the Patriot Act was bastardized for other purposes, there is no compelling reason to allow the government access to my private information.
There is no question about how Apple changed things- from the personal PC, iPod to iPhone. I am blah on the watch idea.
I keep wondering - what’s the next big thing? It seems that their recent big announcements are little more than upgrades of current products.
I have an old laptop with XP, but since I work for myself I decided to get the macbookpro for my “remote” or travel work. (I am a photographer). It’s video processor and screen are the best for those applications.
We feel the same way. I view the Patriot Act in the context and the circumstances in which it came to light, and I supported many parts of it, others I had reservations about. I viewed that situation as war.
And I wasn’t naive enough to think that once it had been passed, there wouldn’t be parts that would be abused. Or that it wouldn’t be the camel’s nose in the tent.
But the Patriot Act doesn’t require your personal information to be transparent, which is what many of the critics of Apple’s policy are asking for, whether they realize it or not, and I do have an issue with that.
Nice slideshow but I would have taken out either Lisa or HyperCard and put in iTunes. I don't think iTunes gets enough credit as it completely changed the business model of the recording industry and eventually put pretty much everything ever recorded at our fingertips (Apple Music).
There is now no need to ever purchase a piece of music again. But for an affordable monthly price, you can rent everything!
I wish I had all the money back that I spent on CDs and DVDs over the years, not to mention cassettes and vinyl LPs. Now when I want to listen to something, I just stream it on Apple Music regardless of whether I own it or not. All that physical media is sitting in cardboard boxes somewhere.
Recently I came across a set of National Geographic CDs that I bought back in the 1990s. It was 100 years of the National Geographic on CD. I remember convincing my wife to buy it because our children, who were still young at the time, would have an excellent state-of-the-art reference library at their fingertips. But really, I wanted it for myself as well. But it was so cumbersome to use because the software kept telling you to "insert Disc 42" or "insert Disc 27." Can't believe I spent hundreds of dollars on it.
I also purchased the Encyclopedia Brittanica and Microsoft Encarta on CD. How dumb was that? My kids never used it once. They grew up on the web and Wikipedia. They laugh when they come across my collection of "compact discs".
I’m with you on the UI of iTunes and Photos.
iTunes is now oriented entirely to you subscribing to their miserable music service. I can never find the miniscule controls to play my own music. I pretty much gave us and use Picky now.
They really dumbed down Photos and screwed the pooch killing Aperture.
I’ve used Macs since 1984 (my wife managed software licensing at Apple then). For the first time, I’m using one in a business environment instead of a PC and I’m finding LOTS of buggy little things that really inhibit getting work done quickly. Not the least of which is the horrible state of mail apps on Macs.
“...National Geographic CDs that I bought back in the 1990s.”
Same here. I’ve often thought about digging them and others out and copying them, if that’s possible, to a hard drive.
Any thoughts?
