A high-profile pro-gun activist was rushed to hospital after she was shot in the back by her four-year-old son after he found her pistol lying on the back seat of her truck. Jamie Gilt, 31, who posts about firearms on her social media accounts was driving through Putnam County, Jacksonville, Florida yesterday in her truck when she was wounded.

Not a whole lot of details in the article. Range bag perhaps? Under the seat that slid backwards? Purse in the back seat?
What concerns me more is that the child was not strapped in to a seat. Is this a Houdini child? Mine son was. The only thing that worked to keep him in his seat was PAT (pain association therapy) on the butt.

While she broke rules 1 through 100 of firearm safety, if she had been a car enthusiast and blogged about cars, and then ran over a bicyclist while texting, would this have received 1% of the attention? I doubt it.

I remember in the CHL classes I attended that there were students that I thought would not pass, judging by their answers and comments in class. I guess some of them pass with a barely passing grade just like a lot of drivers. Sad.
Does Jacksonville extend into Putnam County? I thought Jacksonville and Duval had merged (except for a few enclave towns) and that the borders were largely congruent. In fact, isn’t Putnam non- adjacent?

The face of stupidity.
People should not be so snippy in their condemnation of her. She paid a price. Live and Learn. I’ve known plenty of experienced hunters and shooters who made gun handling mistakes.
One can drive literally a million miles and not have had an accident and then get in a serious one where the formerly perfect driver is at fault. People make mistakes. There but for the Grace of God go I.
She's obviously a well-intentioned and attractive young lady, but I don't think we want someone this stupid as a spokesman.
I taught my 4 year old proper gun handling, and why. My two year old was there as well. When they heard the big bang, and saw the big hole in the old car, they decided they didn’t want to play with that gun. All of my children were given opportunity to handle that gun, shoot it, and appease their curiosity.
They were taught not to touch the gun because it could hurt them or someone else.
They NEVER messed with that gun, EVER. We had two..a shot gun and a .22 rifle. By the time they were teens, they were excellent shots.
Four isn’t too young to teach them something within their young framework, about the danger of a gun.
