CIA director: The Middle East is the worst it's been in 50 years with 'unprecedented' bloodshed

John Brennan, the CIA director, told a Senate committee Tuesday that the violence and instability in the Middle East was the worst it had been in 50 years, painting a dire picture of a region he said was facing "unprecedented" bloodshed.

Brennan spoke at the Senate Intelligence Committee's annual worldwide-threats hearing, emphasizing the threats the US faces as the Middle East devolves further into chaos.

"The Middle East right now I think is racked by more instability and violence and inter-state conflict than we've seen certainly in the past 50 years," Brennan said. "And the amount of bloodshed and humanitarian suffering is I think unprecedented."

Brennan pointed to the Arab Spring uprisings that started in 2011 as the flash point for the chaos.

"I think it's been five years now since the Arab Spring started to take root, which had a very traumatic impact on governments throughout the region, and the street became alive," Brennan said. "Al Qaeda and terrorist organizations did not trigger that, but they've taken full advantage of it."

Before that it was all peaceful all the time.

He may have a point that the violence and instability in the Middle East is more wide spread than it has been in fifty years but I recall it being pretty bloody during the Iran/Iraq War.

Blame idiot-traitor Obama and idiot Hillary for fomenting the “Arab Spring” to depose Mubarak, Qaddafi, Assad etc which meant more chaos and Muslims killing Muslims.

AND for the premature withdrawal from Iraq which lead to ISIS and other Jihad driven chaos.

No question but that Obama and “we came, we saw he died” cackle, cackle are the parents of all this. That is just a piece of their legacy.

Let them devour each other up but...the victor will be coming after us.

Isn't that better than ALL of them coming after us?

They are already coming after us, although it is not yet a united front for a single caliphate. What is going on is the battle to decide which faction gets to lead the fight.

Tsunamis don't have leaders, they just destroy everything in their path.

Floods of immigrants and refugees...no different.

Hey, Brennan. Any truth to the rumors your boys were in Benghazi trying to get back all those MANPADS you gave the Libyans that ended up in Syria with the ‘rebels’?

Syrian rebels don’t have MANPADS. They have been begging for them.

I realize that the news is they don’t have them but want them. It’s hard to say what they really have.

What are you driving at? The Shiite and Sunni factions are fighting each other to decide whose ideological form of Islam will reign. They are well schooled at deception and that “the enemy of my enemy . . . “

Both are driven by theirs being the the form of Islam they envision to take on “The Great Satan” but they differ greatly from each on detail and will keep their eyes on the prize of a global caliphate while also trying to marginalize any opposition to their ideological road map.

Funny, I didn’t think it was nearly THIS bad 50 years ago (mid 1960s). Back then, Lebanon was a functioning country and you had mostly secular Arab regimes, even if they were less than solidly stable.

To see this kind of bloodshed, you’d probably have to go back much further than that. Maybe to WWI or even the formation of the Ottoman Empire

‘Brennan pointed to the Arab Spring uprisings that started in 2011 as the flash point for the chaos’

No, no, most Leftists/Marxists/Democrats STILL blame GWB....because, you know, HE went into Iraq (always left unsaid is how many Dems voted to go into Iraq, but I guess I am being picky). Responsibility is only a Conservative attribute.....Dems only take credit for anything good that happens on their watch......never responsibility for all the destruction they wreak all over the world.
