Persistent cough that won't go away

Posted on 02/10/2016 12:40:50 PM PST by ConservativeMan55

Hey Freepers!

What are your cough remedies?

I've had a persistent and overwhelming cough since December.

I've been to multiple doctors, been on anti biotics, had all kinds of cough syrups and drops. Nothing seems to stop it.

Anyone have a home remedy? Thanks in advance!

You might try Benadryl to calm the throat irritation.

there is a cough associated with heartburn or gerd. See a GI.

Sometimes it’s cause by postnasal drip and nothing but antihistamine will get rid of it.

Have they ruled out whooping cough? It’s made a comeback.

Get ready for the possibility of having an upper endoscopy.
I’m no doctor, but my brother had one the other day for a chronic cough (and choking) as they think he has something wrong in the upper part of his esophagus. He hasn’t told me the results yet.

I assume you’ve had a chest X-ray already.

I’ve had that cough and it’s funny/odd but I can tell the difference between the two coughs.

This is a dry itchy cough

My older brother had a persistent cough. He was diagnosed with cancer. Get to a doctor right now! better to be safe than sorry.

By the way. My brother caught it in time and has been cancer free for over five years.

Forgot to add that our son was once referred to an ENT due to irritation and inflammation in his throat that made him feel the need to clear it or cough all the time. Turns out that it was irritated from so much throat clearing-a vicious cycle. ENT doc told him that whenever he felt the urge to clear his throat or cough to drink water instead. His last words to us were “water bottle, water bottle, water bottle. Never go anywhere without it.”

Only cost us over $600 for that advice. It worked.

Sometimes a cough is caused by a post nasal drip going down the back of your throat...

Do you ave a slight case of the sniffles...?

I also had a persistent cough for months...it eventually went away...

Vitamin D3 certainly will help... 5000 dose

Benadryl is pretty good for a dry cough. There is likely something environmental going on as well.

Do consider that your body is coughing for a reason. Drugs are available that can fool your brain from telling your body that you need to cough. However, be sure that your lungs don't fill up with infectious liquid causing you to drown.

I coughed incessantly for 2 years. Made me nuts. Others were afraid they would catch whatever I had. I went to so many doctors, including a naturopath. An otolaryngologist thought there was a growth at the base of my tongue and did a hugely expensive biopsy (yet another reason we are planning to leave CT). Turned out it was a form of asthma. I have had the wheezing kind all my life but it was under control without drugs. This is a coughing kind. I have been on Theodur (300 mg 2x per day) and it has given me back a normal life. I am singing in the chorale again too! I am hoping I can taper off it once we get to springtime. I wish you the very best!!
