DPMS G2: A Better AR for Hunting
Field and Stream ^ | January 16, 2014 | The Editors

When DPMS was founded, one of the core principals was getting ARs into hunters' hands. While the original AR design wasn't ideal for most hunting scenarios, the DPMS G2 is certainly another step in the right direction. Chambered in .308, this gun is light and should handle extremely well. The gun features a carbon fiber handguard, a plunger ejector on the bolt, and will retail for about $1,699.

My BIL has one of these chambered in .260 (which uses a necked down .308 brass) His has a heavy, floating, SS barrel, good for driving nails at long distances.

I don't think any of the Gen II rifles come in anything but 7.62 at this time. .260 is known to be a tack driver for sure. I'm heavily invested in .308 and am content with that though.

Noreen makes AR10 type rifles chambered in 30/06, 25/06, .270, 300 win mag, and 7 mm rem mag. I'm keeping an eye on the company and will probably get one of their rifles once I have heard enough good things about them-probably in 30/06.

You definitely got a rifle at an excellent price and it appears to have potential as you learn more about it. As you recite your various issues with a number of .308 rifles, are feeling a little bit star-crossed about the caliber?? LOL...J/K.

Definitely can agree with the fact of trade-offs made and no absolute perfection for all uses. Finding a good AR pattern in a functional hunting caliber can be a consuming quest, as you’ve described. Thanks for the review.

Training is just finding weakness and eliminating it so it doesn't cause problems in the real world. My lesson learned is to always carry spare parts and a sidearm.

Legal in Texas plus 90% of the time I’m on the ranch.

It’s too bad that one of Field and Streams “core principals” isn’t learning how to spell, or how to edit their articles to make sure that writers who can’t spell don’t publish articles with misspellings.

I was looking for a rifle that could fill the role of several different 7.62 NATO SA rifles I have laying around( DSA FAL, Armalite AR10T, PTR-91 pdw) in order to have "the one gun I'd grab if I could only grab one". I'm looking for dependability, ruggedness, accuracy, portability, and handling in no particular order. I figured I'm not the only person looking for that one rifle to grab if they could only grab one so I thought I would share my experiences with this rifle thus far.

Ah, but there is another:

I handled one once but the price seemed too high for what it was.

and the DPMS accepts mil spec AR15 parts from the magwell back which is a BIG plus.

Perhaps. But it took Cerberus(Soros) to buy Remington Arms, and DPMS before it got done.

Why is the first part of my last post in a white font?
