It is time for me to return to Brewster County, a place I love and adore. There is a little town, right on the Rio Bravo, down in the boot heel of Texas, what we call the Big Bend.
They got a beer drinking goat down there, Clay Henry, the Mayor of Lajitas, TX.
It is time for us to parlay.
The Big Bend, El Despoblado, The Badlands. A place where the Commanches ruled back in the day, a place you can cross the river into Mexico for a beer and some fun that does not involve donkeys. I am feeling the call of adventure and next week the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest will be happening.
Lajitas used to be a down-home place where you could hang out at the old Trading Post and pour a few Coronas down the gullet of the Mayor. Now it is a resort with a golf course and a different vibe. But the Mayor is still a beer drinking goat, and I figure to buy that hombre a Corona or two. I'll have one myself, though I hate Mexican beer.
Back in the day we would take the ferry (a rowboat captained by Pablo or Pedro or whoever) and ride our mountain bikes down to San Carlos to buy tequila. Real tequila, with the worm, in round bottles we called "cannonballs." It was not unusual to see mountain bikers riding up the old dirt road with a cannonball in each of three pockets on the backs of their bike jerseys, headed back to cross the river and head up to the Trading Post for a Saturday night with real music from a conjunto band and dancing on the patio. Man, those were the good old days. May they live again.
If this interests you at all, listen to this song.
Cool.
Viva Terlingua!
I tend to shy of criminal borders, but I’ve been close to here ...

Headed for Balmorea State Park for Spring Break - not exactly Big Bend, but if anybody’s got any suggestions, I’ll take ‘em.
Knew that would be Robert Earl Keen before I even clicked on it, He makes GREAT Beer too. I love Big Bend, when GWB was president I was searched regularly leaving that place in my 4X4 Dodge, for Senoritas or dope, I suppose. It might be a good time now back in the States, with my prize, since obummer don’t seem to care what I bring back across.
Heard they put a fence across the WINDOW cause people were jumping out of it. Is that true?
Hey man, Balmorhea SP is a cool place. They got all these black catfish in the pool there. Check out the Davis Mountains if you can. Way cool.
never have been that far west in Texas, thanks for the info.
Wow, no way. I have not been in The Basin in several years, but I guess it figures. Some nekkid dude jumped off Emory Peak a while back, be hard to fence that off :)
The goat should be running in the democrat party presidential primary, it would be a better choice than the socialist and the corrupt nutcase.
Yeah, I came through that checkpoint south of Marathon in the middle of the night one time. 2 Border Patrol officers, 2 Brewster County deputies and 2 DPS troopers and ME. They wanted a look in the back of my truck and I offered to let a K9 roll on my dirty laundry if they had one.
Waved me on through like it was nothin’.

From where?
Hit BBQ’s.
Yes, add Ft Davis, Ft Davis National Monument (ancient army base), McDonald Observatory star gazing, then make a run down to Marfa to see the Marfa Lights (look ‘em up) and stay in the haunted Paisano Hotel. Then try a soak in the Langford hot springs — http://www.texasmonthly.com/list/ten-must-do-activities-in-big-bend/langford-hot-springs/
Do the Star Party at the McDonald Observatory in Ft. Davis. I’m not big on the stars or space, etc......but, to see that many stars at night and to learn a little about them is really fun.....amazing what you can see in a sky that dark...
The drive from a Balmorhea to Ft. Davis is one of the best in TX....it’s completely worth doing
Did you see the documentary series “Badlands” bout a murder og of the owner of La Kava in Terlingua?
