'An alternative exists': the US citizens who vowed to flee to Canada – and did
The Guardian ^ | February 1, 2016 | Jordan G. Teicher

In November 2004, David Drucker and his wife Pam were at home listening to NPR when they heard the news that would change their lives: George W Bush had been re-elected as president of the United States.

Canada considers changing national anthem to include country's women Read more In the lead-up to election day, the couple had made a pact: if John Kerry won, they would build their dream house in Vermont; if he lost, they would move to Canada. A year later, they were on their way to Vancouver to start their new lives.

“It’s been a little over a decade now. We have clear eyes about what we did. We have no intention of going back,” Drucker said.

The Druckers were not alone. On election day in 2004, a record-setting 179,000 people visited Canada’s official immigration website, the majority of them Americans. And as anxieties about the outcome of 2016 begin to grow, some Americans are again musing about fleeing to their northern neighbor.

Back then, acquaintances of mine picked up their family and moved to Canada. They were very nice people. They said they didn’t like what was happening here, but they never really explained their reasons, at least not to me.

You've never been to Alberta quite obviously.

FOUR STRONG WINDS

Four strong winds that blow lonely, Seven seas that run high, All these things that don't change, Come what may. But our good times are all gone, And I'm bound for moving on. I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

Think I'll go out to Alberta, Weather's good there in the fall. Got some friends that I can go to working for, Still I wish you'd change your mind If I asked you one more time, But we've been through that a hundred times or more.

Four strong winds that blow lonely, Seven seas that run high, All these things that don't change, Come what may. But our good times are all gone, And I'm bound for moving on. I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

If I get there before the snow flies, And if things are going good, You could meet me if I send you down the fare. But if you wait until it's winter, It will be no good 'Cause that wind sure can blow way out there.

Four strong winds that blow lonely, Seven seas that run high, All these things that don't change, Come what may. But our good times are all gone, And I'm bound for moving on. I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

There’s an excellent crossing point just above the Falls. They would have to swim a little bit, however. I can provide for them free transportation to the site.

So if the Canadian Gov’t changes to something they dislike, they’ll move to Mexico? It kinda tells you there is no real allegiance to any country unless it is 100% to their liking. No country needs anyone like that. You can’t have a Gov’t who is all things to all the people. These are people who run, they will never stand and fight for a nation.

So, why didn’t they come back when Obama was elected?? Too many freebies in Canada not yet offered here?

Detroit lies north of Canada. Might explain some things, eh.

Nor has he been to BC. Mind numbingly beautiful, with an embarrassment of resources.

Canadians are for the most part very civil. Like Georgians.
Good manners.

I have been to BC many, many times. Washington State and Alaska are in the same category.

I was referring to the culture of the people, not the scenic wonders.

Alberta to Canada is like Texas to the USA. They really don’t lend themselves to a valid comparison :)

That said, I still say Canadians are dull, dull, dull. Sorry but that’s da fax, except maybe Captain William Shatner :)

OTOH Neil Young is a mess, he’s a weird duck for sure.

I’m being a bit tongue-in-cheek here :)

Like to rib my Canuck neighbors now and then to see if they can be emotionally engaged. But usually, their reaction is ....

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Every time your new PM is mentioned, I cannot help but think of an old Saturday Night Live skit that mentioned Mrs. Trudeau’s “extra curricular activities.”

a large number of well-off conservative Tories were deported to Canada.

Actually many of them left of their own accord or left under duress. The Loyalists in Massachusetts, many of them from Brattle St., left under duress. They boarded up their church and loaded the wagons. The church was closed for ten years and to this day still has the bullet holes in its walls.

My ancestors left Massachusetts and stayed loyal to the king. As luck would have it - after the War of 1812, where they lived changed into US hands and over night they became US citizens.

I think I see the problem here.
