Oregon standoff Day 28: What you need to know Friday
OregonLive ^ | 1/29/2016 | The OregonianOregonLive

As we enter Day 28 of the standoff at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, here are the latest developments:

And then there were four. After a series of arrests and voluntary departures, the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was left in the hands of just four people Thursday night. The live-streams that had fully documented the earlier days of the nearly monthlong occupation petered out. As occupiers stopped answering call from the outside, they apparently kept up negotiations over the terms of their departure. Talks with the FBI were continuing "around the clock," said Greg Bretzing, the special agent in charge in Portland.

As state troopers trained their guns on Robert "LaVoy" Finicum along a secluded eastern Oregon highway he reached twice for a pocket that police say contained a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. That's when they fatally shot Finicum, a video released Thursday by the FBI appears to show....

A network of patriot groups from across the Northwest issued a call Thursday morning for supporters to flood into Burns....

The 154-year old law under which Ammon Bundy and others were arrested this week was created to deal with a nation torn apart by war. But it made sense for the armed occupiers who holed up at Oregon's Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to be charged under the Civil-War era statute, experts say, because like the Confederates, the occupiers rejected federal power....

Video released last night but the medical examiner’s office will not release the autopsy report.

Interesting question, when will the body of LaVoy Finicum be released?

How did it look? Is there substance to the FBI’s account of the shooting?

He was in a snowbank when he got shot after he exited the vehicle, hands up but probably also unsteady in the snowbank allowing the notion from authorities ‘he was reaching for a pocket with a gun in it’.

Here in PA I’ve had to battle snowbanks after the big snow and the ability to balance one’s body in them is difficult and I am a man of comparable age to Mr. Finicum.

There was a video shot overhead by an airplane. Three LEO vehicles had a roadblock and the pickup tried to veer around them in the snow and got stuck. A figure jumps out of the truck, tries to run a few yards and then is confronted front and back by men with drawn weapons. He appears to reach down to his side at least two times and is then shot. He did not charge anyone but it does look like he may have been reaching for a weapon.

I would like to see on-the ground video before forming a final opinion here.

Comments on the Oregonlive web were probably typical of what lives in Oregon. I would not want one of them with me in a foxhole. Almost all of the comments show a complete lack of respect for States Rights and total acceptance of Federal Intervention, as well as land ownership. Sad commentary on what people know or don’t know about the long gone Republic.

What you need to know:

White civil disobedience will get you killed.

Black civil disobedience will get your picture on stamps.

A “Snatch” operation is used to take someone alive.

An “Ambush” operation is used to kill people.

The hard part about a Snatch operation is shutting down the escape routes.
This fellow managed to get away, so the government agents didn’t do a good job of shutting down the escape routes.

You will have to decide whether that was in error or on purpose.

I believe it was a poorly done Snatch operation. The government agents had overwhelming advantage in all areas.

Overall:

Planning - failure
Execution - failure

He came around the corner, sees the roadblock, hits his brakes and then tries to go around the roadblock, with brake lights off. They get stuck in the snow and he comes running out of the truck. Not working in his favor was that he came out of the truck quickly and was turning around a lot, then his hands went down towards his jacket.

Their comments.

Anyone from Oregon who can comment what % of Oregon they represent?

I would not want to go inside OR borders if most of them are like this.

The comments on there are so maniacally hateful that I'm suspicious it's big brother gov.bots upping it's game on social media.

The really sad part about it is it looks like this Oregon Rep went through the democratic process to try to improve the relationship between BLM and ranchers but no, the feds will have none of it.

Greg Walden addresses U.S. House on situation in Harney County, OR, federal overreach in the West

Summary - 24 minute c-span - Walden talks about legislation he wrote to alleviate growing tension between ranchers and BLM. Despite it's passage, he describes how BLM often ignores the law. For example, BLM was supposed to build fences to keep cattle off "federal land" but it doesn't.

He also provides some context for the Hammond's outrageous prison sentence and cites examples of BLM setting these back fires on private land without consequence or even reimbursing for things like burned fences. Walden states that with the fines, the 2 Hammonds back in prison, and the stripped grazing rights - that leaves the grandmother in charge of the ranch, that will be in BK before long.

The video is taken by a drone, and too far away to see much.

My first question - any other video from ground level?

I tend to sympathize with their general cause, however when they first started I wondered how their outcome would fair when compared to Waco or Ruby Ridge. I wondered if they had some end game strategy where there would be no bloodshed and come out on top with more support nationally than when they started.

I really think it could have been done better than the last of them bartering against odds that guarantee a loss.

They would have done much better if they had taken over the facility with no arms (not so much as a baseball bat or knife), stealing no vehicles, damaging no property, invited the media in, made several speeches stating their claims and goals, and peacefully leaving after about 3 or 4 days.

Oregon Live is the Portland Oregonian’s web site. Aka, Portlandia. It’s a different nation all together. This is the “Love Wins” crowd that is proud of their sanctuary city.

Vid at Oregon live link:

http://www.oregonlive.com/#/0

Looks to me like he reached for his pocket a couple of times.

4 minute vid. Shooting at around 1:45 to 2:00 area.

At about 2:30 as the plane goes around the side, there appear to be little flashes in the snow outside the passenger side of the truck. Not sure what was going on there (flash grenades?).

There’s also a spray snow after that around 2:45 - 2:50 which looks like FBI shot into passenger door. Windows were up. Could be how other guy got shot in arm.

I listened to a video supposedly the young lady that was in the vehicle with LaVoy/Bundys. She testified that LaVoy had his hands in the air when shot. Not true. I realize adrenaline was flowing and folks in a pressing situation typically have very subjective memories. After time, other memories begin to come to the forefront of their minds.

Not saying she was lying, she probably was not. It is how she perceived the situation under duress.

So, LaVoy made the decision not to be arrested and thrown into a cell for a very very long time. He chose instead to die. That was his hill. Unfortunate it ended like this.

The fellas left in the refuge have two choices. Surrender or fight. The Feds are not going to let them...walk away. Ain't gonna happen. They may give those guyz the impression they are just gonna go home and forget this ever happened, but they will be captured and prosecuted. Likely spend time in the federal pokie.

Lots of lessons to be learned here folks. Lots to glean from beginning to end. Any thoughts?

I’ve seen some speculation that he was shot in the hip to deliberately cause that reaction.
