Limbaugh: ‘Nationalism And Populism Have Overtaken Conservatism’ In GOP [VIDEO]
Daily Caller ^ | 1-20-2016 | CHRISTIAN DATOC

Posted on 01/20/2016 11:40:34 AM PST by Citizen Zed

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday that Trump's popularity is evidence that "nationalism and populism have overtaken conservatism" in the Republican Party

"The Trump triumph - the Trump coalition - is exposing the fact that it isn't conservative orthodoxy, or conservatism or any of the hard work of the conservative elite," explained Limbaugh, "that is causing people to be conservative."

LIMBAUGH: It's something really simple... They're fed up with the modern day Democratic Party... The Republican Party establishment does not understand this. They do not know who their conservative voters are. They've over-estimated their conservatism... They're not liberals. They're not Democrat. Many of them do not want to be thought of as conservatives for a host of reasons. So somebody who comes along and is able to convey that he or she understands why they're angry and furthermore, is going to do everything to fix it, is going to own them. What's happening here is that 'nationalism' - dirty word, ooh people hate it - and 'populism' - even dirtier word. Nationalism and populism have overtaken conservatism in terms of appeal.

Which is why defeating the Uniparty this election is Job #1.

Trump can do it. Cruz can do it.

I’m happy we’re fighting between two guys either of whom will stick it to the Uniparty.

"Well, it's more like the self identified faux conservatives have alienated their voters, so they are looking for someone or something else. It's perfectly rational."

There. Fixed it for ya. ;-)

I don’t hold out Reagan as some gold standard. Amnesty, national debt, goodies for illegals where not his best moves.

Maybe a useful title would be "Trumpismo", or "Peronism, American Style". A little bit from the Right, a little from the Left, with a healthy dose of Personality Cult thrown in to tie it all together. Populism, like a riot, is an ugly thing.

I dont agree with rush on this....trump is a celebrity that people think they know...they are willing to overlook some flaws that should have doomed his campaign.

I agree that he has a populist streak. I surely understand his appeal. I like that he doesnt cower to political correctness. I like that he is more conservative than most republicans on some issues.

I hate that he could pick four supreme court justices. I would much rather have cruz doing that...its not even close

There is nothing conservative about campaigning for Barack Obama & Goldman Sachs' TPA. Yet the Lion of Conservatism did just that.

You are so uninformed about what TPA actually is. You are conflating it with TPP, either because you are just repeating talking points, or because you are ignorant.

Just to clarify, TPA has been around since the 70's. It creates a framework that lays out what Congress will accept and will not accept in any trade negotiations in advance. This is to make sure that negotiators are not making deals that Congress knows in advance they will not approve.

Let's look at this from a practical aspect. If you are a businessman negotiating a contract, how would you feel if every time you thought you had an agreement, the opposing party had to take it back to the corporate office, where they reviewed for months on end, only to have the other party come back and tell you that on items you spent months negotiating, the other party never had the authority to negotiate in the first place? And now you have to start all over.

Even with TPA, Congress has the ability to decide that the Administration did not follow the guidelines established and can either reject the entire agreement, or they can amend the agreement based on the failure to abide by the TPA requirements.

So this idea that support for TPA=support for TPP is simplistic and naive, and just a liberal talking point.

Trump is more liberal than Ross Perot!

Perot was pro-American, pro-American business, for a border secure fence, if not a wall.

Perot showed how firmly he was against Muslim terrorism by sending his own men to pull his people out of Iran.

Anyone noticing Trump threatening to send "special contractors" to extract our hostages, I didn't.

Perot was ridiculed, called "nativist," "populist," a "xenophobe," and even teased by some as a "buzz saw with a bad hair cut!"

Looking back however, Perot was exactly but Americans hadn't had enough of our powerbrokers running our lives and scre#ing us in the process!

The alternative would be someone like Cruz running a conservative campaign with populist rhetoric in regards to immigration and middle class wages, in addition to his anti establishment themes.

The point is that populism should be utilized by conservatives to win elections. It doesn’t yield a conservative, limited government, pro constitution governing
coalition. In Trump’s case it will more than likely guarantee a moderate to liberal legislative coalition. Making deals while putting forth the message that the populist can govern more efficiently, fairly and humanely than the “stupid” ruling class.

I would prefer Cruz myself. But we have to face the reality that most likely it isn’t going to happen, then what?

That rumor was about Nancy, not about Reagan.

YES we the American voters ARE angry....we are angry because we have sent our House and Senator people to do OUR work in 2012 an 2014 and they haven’t done a DARN thing but fill their pockets with OUR money....

YES we the American voters ARE angry...we are angry because all the jobs are going to other countries, while here in America, illegal immigrants are taking OUR jobs from us; they are treated better than our VETERANS and WOUNDED WARRIORS who have given their lives, and body parts to defend the very FREEDOMS that MAKE AMERICA GREAT!!!

ANGRY, you have NO idea just how ANGRY we are, and guess what, we are supporting someone who is going to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! DEAL WITH IT!!!

Perot ran as an Independent. I don’t vote for slip the republican ticket. I voted for Bush and Dole the following election. Had he gotten the Republican nomination then a different story.
