Men have better sense of direction than women, study suggests
Science Daily ^ | December 7, 2015

Posted on 12/07/2015 3:08:55 PM PST by sparklite2

Using fMRI, the researchers saw that men in the study took several shortcuts, oriented themselves more using cardinal directions and used a different part of the brain than the women in the study.

But when women got a drop of testosterone under their tongue, several of them were able to orient themselves better in the four cardinal directions.

My husband has a great natural clock. He’s never worn a watch but can often guess the correct time within a few minutes.

I know what you mean! Before we moved to our current house we would stay at my sister’s home when visiting family. We eventually moved to the area and into a home with a similar floor plan, but oriented 180 degs. from hers. 25 years later!!! I still sometimes point in the wrong direction when I’m in the house and mention going to a certain store. I get the raised eyebrow look from my husband.:-)

Sounds just like me & my husband ~ thus the reason I always point.

Once I have been someplace I can always find my way there again, even after years. It’s my superpower!

GPS will often take you on a ridiculous route.

Years ago when visiting DC we were using the GPS system in the rental car. Just as we were crossing the Potomac the crazy GPS lady told us to take a right ~ we ignored her as the car had no flotation devices.

My husband and I are opposite, he uses landmarks and I go by N,S,E and W.I do have trouble with left and right. If I tell another woman that a location is N,S E or W of whatever she looks at me like I have two heads. My dad also taught me to read a map.

Have you ever tried to get an address for your GPS entry from a woman?

Just hope the cell phone battery is charged up, ‘cuz the question ‘what is the address?’ is entirely foreign to a woman.

Normally it’s faster to go through the ‘turn at the third clothing store on the right, you know the one that has those great sales, murmuring OK.

Then when they say we are the fourth house on the left, the one with the matching garage doors.

That’s your chance, that’s when you ask, and what is the address at that house?

They’ll still hesitate, but realize that it’s easier to answer than to go through the whole 5 minutes directions again.

Maybe they do. But why is it when they drive and they get lost, they refuse to stop for directions?

Which reminds me of the old joke:

Q. Why does human conception need only one egg, but thousands of sperm?

A. Because the sperm won't ask for directions.

The same with my husband and me. I wonder if it is because of where we grew up? I was raised in Detroit which basically has a grid of NSEW roads superimposed on spokes of a partial wheel. He was raised in a small city along the Mississippi River where many of the roads are not straight. They probably follow old indian trails and/or their shape is dictated by the topography.

Men consistently performed better than women.

So, where are we going with this?

Hah. I can almost always point out N/S whereas my husband sometimes struggles. OTOH, I’m kinda bossy . . . maybe I already have that “extra” testosterone. ;)

Women would also develop a better memory of objects/place. Survival of the tribe was aided by remembering where various plant based food sources are located each month. So women’s memory of these was a very important suplement to men’s capacity to locate mobile objects in time and space. I think this is why men are better at algebra, whereas women may be better at geometry.

But as I pointed out in another comment, women as a survival mechanism have good memories about place and time of static objects like fruit, nuts, and roots. When they go shopping, they are always checking out where things are that they might want to go back for later. Either when they have more money, or the need arises, or when the things might go on sale (be ripe). It makes sense. Thus, it may be that in some aspects women are better planners.

I do very well with maps, 66 years ago when I was about 10, my father put me in charge of map reading when we took long trips. It was my job to see where our next turn would be and watch for the signs with the Route numbers. Also when I was in Geology class, I could read the topographic maps with no difficulty. On the other hand when I took a spacial relationships test in a Psychology Class I scored 99.5 percentile. So I don’t know which came first the practical experience or a naturally strong spacial sense. Also I probably have a somewhat higher than average female testosterone level. However, I very much love to window shop and gather shells on the beach. Drives my sweetheart nuts.
