Police Union to NFL: Protect Against Terrorism! Allow Concealed Carry For Retired Cops
Townhall ^ | November 30, 2015 | Katie Pavlich

A little over one week after multiple ISIS terror attacks in Paris, one of which was carried out a soccer stadium, the National Fraternal Order of Police is asking the NFL to reverse it's ban on concealed carry in America's football stadiums for current or retired law enforcement officers. From Fox News:

More guns are needed at NFL games to keep fans safe, according to the nation's largest police union -- which recently asked the league commissioner to let certain firearms owners pack heat on Sundays.

The National Fraternal Order of Police has asked the NFL to lift its ban on fans carrying guns at games, at least for retired and off-duty law enforcement officers who hold permits to carry concealed weapons. In a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, FOP President Chuck Canterbury said armed cops are the best bet for stopping a terrorist attack inside a stadium.

“Today, I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to urge you to rescind this policy, which weakens the safety and security of NFL players, personnel and fans,” read the Nov. 20 letter, which was reported by BuckeyeFirearms.org. “The terrorist attacks and threats of attacks from organizations like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) are selecting targets based on the amount of death and injury they can inflict -- mass murder and casualty events.

“Well-attended venues and areas are being deliberately targeted by the radical killers who do not intend or expect to survive the assault," the letter continued. "Law enforcement, even when working actively with highly trained and skilled security professionals, cannot be certain that all threats will be detected and neutralized.”

It's a start. Better advocacy would be for concealed carry in stadiums as an option available to all with a permit.

I can already hear the "drunk idiots will be shooting each other" arguments in response to this proposal, but it's important to point out that when the Virginia legislature (home of many RedSkins fans) voted to allow concealed carry in restaurants and bars (for everyone, not just cops), the same argument was made. The reality seen, however, was a drop in crime at restaurants and bars by more than five percent. Like stadiums, people also watch football in restaurants and bars, where the law requires those practicing concealed carry to remain sober.

Virginia's bars and restaurants did not turn into shooting galleries as some had feared during the first year of a new state law that allows patrons with permits to carry concealed guns into alcohol-serving businesses, a Richmond Times-Dispatch analysis found.

The number of major crimes involving firearms at bars and restaurants statewide declined 5.2 percent from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011, compared with the fiscal year before the law went into effect, according to crime data compiled by Virginia State Police at the newspaper's request.

And overall, the crimes that occurred during the law's first year were relatively minor, and few of the incidents appeared to involve gun owners with concealed-carry permits, the analysis found.

The other great oxymoron in American life is the regulation that a commissioned officer in the United States Armed forces is not allowed to carry a sidearm when in uniform. If they can’t be trusted or are inept with a gun, somewhere along the line things have gone horribly wrong.

Agreed. We can ccw in bars, restaurants, and liquor stores in Colorado and there haven’t been any shoot outs. I agree any ccw person should be allowed to carry in a stadium. If I am carrying I don’t drink, period. These assumptions that all soldiers are expert shots and all police officers are expert shots are getting annoying. I am a veteran tanker, couldn’t hit crap with small arms. Give me a tank OTOH

Screw that! Why just cops?

From an NRA presentation on concealed carry:

FBI statistics: Armed citizens hit their target 82% of the time versus 18-24% for cops.

I don’t believe there should be any gun free zones, including casinos and bars. Carrying while under the influence should be treated the same as driving under the influence. Businesses aren’t supposed to discriminate but are encouraged to discriminate against those who would carry firearms, even concealed firearms. I don’t believe firearms should be banned from facilities that were financed by taxpayers even though they are leased out.

When did that “regulation” go into effect? Can you cite it?

I have been on the “outside” ie a civilian, for a long time.

My fighter and bomber pilots all carried side arms on alert duty, and I had 15 weapons listed on my last PCS travel orders, as a mere NCO.

I'll grant that other than official alert or mission activation status, Posse Comitatus regulations were strictly adhered to, in order to avoid even the appearance of a DOD element prepared to augment any civilian police forces.

Various state National Guards exempted, as they are under State control, not Federal, for the most part.

Did I carry any of my weapons (concealed or otherwise) while in uniform, Stateside, during peacetime?

Well probably not.
Did I have ready access to them?
Well duh....

Exactly.

Why not allow Soldiers and Marines the same opportunities?

God knows that they know how to shoot and exercise weapon discipline, and probably much better than coppers can.

People forget that NYPD coppers shot 9 innocent people while trying to shoot a gunman at the Empire State Building in 2012.

I've read that the reason for that is because cops are trained to spray suppressive fire. I have no idea if it's true, and I don't know that it makes a whole lot of sense if it is.

LEOs are trained to stop the aggressive action if it takes one or many more shots.

It does not take very long to empty a magazine.

The trouble with Most LEOs just like civilians is 90% of them really don’t care.

Another about 7% are better than average and practice more.

Then one has the top 3% that shoot a lot and are gun people they are the ones that shoot in competition and take a lot of pride in being good shots.

It can be hard for gunnies to understand why others don’t practice and shoot more.

There are many reasons for this money, time and a place to do it are some of the major reasons.

But like may activities if there is a will there is a way.

To be good at any thing one needs to spend the time and money to do so.

Why just cops?

Because they're better than mere 'civilians'. Just ask them. They'll BS you all about it.

I'm really tired of government employees demanding special privileges.
