WASHINGTON - When an expert federal panel concluded earlier this year that drinking five cups of coffee a day can be part of a "healthy lifestyle," even hinting that coffee is good for you, the announcement prompted a glut of headlines extolling the national habit.
"Do you love coffee? You should probably be drinking even more," one news outlet crowed.
This burst of coffee enthusiasm was set off by the conclusions of the federal advisory committee that helps write the government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
"Strong and consistent evidence shows that consumption of coffee within the moderate range (3 to 5 cups per day...) is not associated with increased risk of major chronic diseases," the panel's report said. "Moderate coffee consumption can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle."
Yet at least for some scientists, it's far from clear that coffee is harmless. In fact, emerging findings from genetics suggest a very different take on America's favorite drink: while coffee might possibly be beneficial for some people, it very well may be harmful for others.

Regular caffeine intake is poisonous. It’s incredibly addictive and drives adrenal exhaustion, which in turn drives heart disease.
Well, I’m one of those who can drink 3 cups and go to sleep, so I’m not going to worry about it.
“When I was a child and I asked for coffee, they told me no! Drinking coffee would make me short and brown!”
So, I wasn’t the only one! They told me I would turn black! Somehow, I didn’t believe them and was drinking coffee regularly by age seven. I’m still pretty darned white!
Even if “experts “ produce a study it’s still bull$hit. It’s impossible to find individuals who are exactly alike in all respects except for their coffee drinking habits. Read a book on statistics.
Yeah but are you short?
We’re your relatives from east Texas?
Coffee and tobacco are my two favorite vegetables. Truth be told, they’d be my only vegetables if they didn’t hand out celery at Buffalo Wild Wings.
No, I’m not short. My relatives moved to central Texas from northern Louisiana after The War of Northern Aggression.
Me neither. I drink one large mug of coffee per day. I put sugar and cream in it til I get it just right. Makes the day start off right. Tomorrow I’m having some of my new pumpkin spice seasonal blend. Can’t wait. :-)

Similar to mine
Give me an Americano with an extra shot of nicotine.
See? Spoken like a junkie defending his fix.
That’s why I like it black! Adding all that fru-fru crap is for wimps!

Everyone is different. I know a few people who have severe caffeine addiction. It can be addictive, yes, it can impair your immune system, it can kill the beneficial bacteria in your gut, it can contribute to fatigue. And some people can tolerate lots with no effects. It’s like the butter and eggs scare. We are free to consume. Myself, I drink a cup a day in the morning. I like a low acid coffee that is not very strong. I also take cream and sweetener. I drink it because I enjoy it. These studies are a waste of money IMO and it always seems like there is an agenda behind them. We just need to make care of ourselves and pay attention to what we eat and drink, instead of being mindless. Rant over.
BTTT
I never drank coffee until I was about 40. Now, it is the absolute pinnacle of my day. I get all the crap in the morning done that I’d rather not do and then, it’s internet politics and coffee time. Best 30 minutes of my day.
